1 2 know

May i know what’s the best bait for haruan? try earthworm n prawn not effective, can’t get live frog from aqua shop here in Brunei.

Have you tried casting with spoons, lures, soft plastics and spinnerbaits?
Sometimes, artificals work just as good as natural baits.Give it a try and you might be surprised with the results.[;)]

Read the topic on “Thread to seek Bro Marlin’s help on SP”. There are a lot to learn on the artificial lures/SPs on fishing haruan.

If you can find earth worms and prawn, you can find lizards to fish if you don’t want to use anything artifical. Live fish would be another choice their natural food.

Feeding fish if not get any on rod and line, let them grow bigger to fish another day.

I’ve try SP lizard, spoon, lures, spinnerbait and of course SP frog, the problem here is many fish splashing water and many fallen trees structure, most of the time fish whack we strike straight away snag, our problem is that river rich of “crocs” (over 10’) so most of the time just cut off my line. Last weekend i’ve lost few whiplash factory frog and scum frog, broke now so thinking of using bait first.

In that case, I would not even think of fishing there at all![;)]

1st of all what type of line & poundage you are using? It is wise if you are using braided tie a direct mono shock leader about 1-1.5 ft, in this way when snapped you won’t lose so much braided line 5lb mono heavier should be idle. Usually the mono will give way and the breakage is at the knot, normally braided is heavier than it’s original specs. Check for abrasion of braided always, a longer mono of about 5-6 ft. should save your main line. In this sort of places you mentioned it is better to strike once you know the fish has taken your bait. Set the drag tighter and pump the fish fast.
But letting the crock take your bait is more fun? Has any croc go after your lures? Better not to fish in those places, if you insist follow the mentioned method.

My combo was Abu Revo + Sable Dance (Golden Mean) max 4oz PE#1 + 0.40mm Covema mono + Mustad Dynamite Ultra braid 15lbs. The local there saw us fishing clear up some places for us to cast which is much higher n safer, so far only seen 1 time crocs.

Anyway, at Brunei Lamunin area most spot will see crocs, according to native don’t disturb them only, i myself seem them hantap monkey b4 while fishing. This area famous for dalak, badus, belida and sebarau, it’s where stream water and river meet. Last weekend those who continue casting rewarded with 20 dalak at 1kg in size.

Here are some of the spot view we explored from google earth…

Question 2,
I’ve came across R&L vcd how they cast sebarau with spoon n lures at crystal clear water too but it seem not so effective here, sebarau hides in betw stream (black water) n main river (milo water), most kakis here used spinnerbait hook up. would like to know the best bait too, ve’ try Izaki paste, fruits, worm, SP but not effective.

12345…

what is a dalak? any pictures?

no fish no glory!!!

Haruan lah, people here called dalak, badus also one of the species think KL people called ZIM PAN (cantonese).

Since using google earth we successfully explored a lot of kolam and tasek, make them into dvd display at tackle shop, off season tackle shop business also very good sale especially fresh water item, frog n spinner even running out of stock. Some rich kakis even buy Iphone to explore spot.

Maybe you guys should try google earth maybe there’s a kolam next to your house…haha, frankly, there are more than 30 kolam at Brunei bandar area which we never notice, some even right beside main road, going offshore need to wait till march so we become bush man at the moment.

Back to square one, any sifu can name me some good bait for haruan?

Actually, we had good results with house geckos. Only problem is getting them in sufficient numbers. Dont know why it is but whenever you want one, there are not around!

Crickets & grasshoppers small haruan might take but most of the time other fish will grab it before the haruan, cicak better choice, dead lampan & leekoh 2"-4" also can with slow retrieves. It is also possible to work the weed beds or the bottom. Use spinning gears for live baits, medium action.
The baits you mentioned will normally be take by other fishes and chances of getting a sizeable haruan is very slim.
Good luck.

This is bujuk/zim pan or we called it badus here right?

This species so far max 1kg size, only get them from black water.

And this is haruan/sang ye or dalak we called.

Haruan easy to get, can get from road side pond.

in sabah we also called it badus. or jalak. (haruan) try various type of lure or any other artificial bait available. sometime badus strike whatever came across.. but sometime they would had been silent. for better result is using live bait, FROG. for most of the time, i already caught this badus using spinnerbait… still not having strike with other lure yet… but, try and error is 1 way we learn and understanding the fish type that we want to catch… good luck bro… just a simple tips from me… i’m also in learning of this sport fishing game…[:D]

Bro,
I’ve try many type of lures and SP from Bakau to japanese brand, do hook up quite a lot of haruan n badus , just 1 2 know what’s the best bait only cos’ some places we went terribly hard to cast with even spinning set up, so, ISO rod + bait the best way.

This is a bujuk over here in West Malaysia. Is it the same on on the first pix?
