Just in case you’ll be around in Sydney or Melbourne, there will be a Fly Fishing Conclave in Sydney (5-6 September) and in Melbourne (3-4 October).
During the conclave you will have the opportunity to meet Australian top Fly Fishing personality like Peter Morse and Peter Hayes, Justin Duggan (well known saltwater guide in Sydney - Sydney conclave only), Shaun Ash (Gold Coast guide & tyer). Also presence are Nick Taransky (world renown bamboo rodmaker) and top international tyer Mick Hall and Muz Wilson.
I’m also one of the tutor at the conclave, I’ll be conducting/tutoring ‘Two Handed Rod Spey Casting’ workshop.
I was born in Indonesia but have been living in Australia since 1978. Since earlier this year I joined Peter Hayes Fly Fishing as one the casting instructor at the conclaves.
Please visit: http://www.peterhayesflyfishing.com/ and download the program under ‘Conclave’ menu.
The tutors info also can be found under this menu.
Many thanks for inviting us to the conclave… I hope next year you will invited us again… as this year, I don’t think I would dare to travel around in plane… due to the H1N1… don’t wanna get quarantine for 7 day on board… [:)]
I will keep you inform regarding this event and I will post some photo of the conclave when its become available. I thoroughly enjoy visiting this forum and I’m very happy that fly fishing grew its popularity exponentially in Malaysia in the past few years. You’re very lucky that you have so many of those exotic species to catch on a fly.
It will be good if you can keep us posted on the event a little bit earlier… most of us are working and need to plan in advance, and for my self… I will have to apply my ‘VISA’ from my internal affair minister…(Wife)… a lot of case, I have to lay a story line few months before the trip or event… slowly lure the minister to approve my application… sometime have to exchange with LV bags… [:(]

Same same lah! Everytime I need to buy new tackle, I need permission from the Internal Affair Minister. My excuses is always the same “It’s a bargain, they’re on sale and very cheap[;)][;)]”
My big worries is one day when I’m gone, the Internal Affair Minister will sell all my fishing gear ‘at the price that I told her’ Ooops! Then there will be a lot of real bargain!![:D][:D]

Hi Bintoro,
Well said about ‘exotic species’. I guess here we are saying the same about fly fishing Down Under [:D][:D][:D].
Hmmmmm… was it grass or water is always greener on the other side of the fence/world? [:D][}:)]
Hi Bintoro,it’s nice to know you visit this forum .Pls send my best thoughts and wishes to Nick Taransky .I am a fan of his beautiful cane rods.Hope one day i can also make cane rods like he does.Cheers bro.
Hi Joseph, I will pass your wishes to Nick. I speak to Nick regularly. I have cast a lot of his rods, different tapers, different weight and length. I must say his work is not just a work of art, every single one is a masterpiece. It’s a real joy to cast. Please visit his website http://www.taranskybamboo.com.au/
In Melbourne, every June we have the annual “Bamboo Rod Weekend”. Started on Saturday with the “Bamboo Rodmakers Day” held at the ‘Northern Suburb Fly Fishing Club’ club house, this is for those who interested in making bamboo rods (hobbyist & amateurs). Professional bamboo rodmakers form Australia and New Zealand such as Nick, Brad Wagonner, Peter McKean etc give a workshops, step by step demonstrations, tips and advices on how to build the rod.
And on Sunday is the “Bamboo Rods Casting Day” where all the rodmakers, professional and amateurs alike and bamboo rod owners bring their rods for everybody to try out.
Hi Bintoro,Many thanks for the useful info on the cane rod activities at your club.I have made several cane rods using local bamboo and also do some spey casting in my free time.A friend of mine, Darrell from Adelaide, knows Peter Hayes and Nick Taransky .Maybe you have met him at the club.Certainly dry fly fishing with a cane rod on a small stream for our local hill trout is my favourite pastime.Hope one day you can join me .Cheers.
Yes I know Mick Hall very well, he is the one who kick started my fly fishing interest. I’ve learn a lot from him. I’ll be flying off with him to Sydney this Friday for the conclave. Very nice man indeed.
