Ahphas 103 R-edition - 6.8 gears

I love my alphas r-edition and alway thought it is a very versatile reel, and also rated for salt water use. The only reason that I seldom use them, is mainly because of the low retrieve speed at 5.8. We have been spoilt by the 6.3 or 7.1 speed reels in market nowadays. Was thinking of getting rid of the alphas after i got my hand on a 7.1 T3, but that’s another story.

Anyway, today I received my order for the Alphas 105H’s gear and just want to share my attempt at swapping the 5.8 gears in my ALphas 103 R-edition with the Alphas Finesse 105H’s 6.8 gears.

First off, these are the Alphas R 5.8 gears that were taken out:

one by one comparison, main gear. Alphas R (black) Alphas 105 (gold)

Alphas R’s main gear is made of brass metal while Alphas 105’s main gear is made of aluminium, with noticeable weight difference among them.

Next pinion gear, alphas R (left), alphas 105 (right). In this case, alphas R’s pinion gear slightly heavier at 3.6g

Worm gears, no weight difference between them.

Alphas 105H’s 6.8 drive train set fit Alphas R perfectly

Great attempt. My quick calculation by swapping into 105 gears it increases the reel weight by 6.8g? How is the lab test and field test verdict?

u not sportsman-like la, knht…

stock 5.8 gear u go n change to 6.8. Dun give the fish any chance!
must use 4.7 gears la, like bantam 100/1000… at least the fish got chance to show you where it can go.

next day i show u my latest finesse reel that just arrived, with 4.1 gear ratio!
haha! i think if we cast 50ft, u can cast twice n reel back, i still retrieving my first cast!
or get those little 2-inch sized reels from china. 3.2 gear ratio.

or this! 1.0:1 gear ratio!

talk so much…well, all alphas and pixy gears are inter-changeable…come, i give my alphas r’s 5.8 gears to you, FOC, but you make sure you swap them into your pixy68L SPR…like that i tabik you got true sport fisherman spirit, give fish a fair chance…want? [:D][:D]

if u give me the gear for free, i may well just take it. hehe.

5.8 is actually a very versatile ratio. It’s not too fast a speed if you’re fishing bottom contact. Not too slow when you fish jerk baits. Just nice when you fish spinnerbaits. However, i think it’s a little too fast if you’re fishing cranks. Definitely too slow for rip baits. that’s just my take. anyway, well hope you enjoy fishing with the revamped gear ratio [;)]

FB,

Your statements are absolutely right, i dun use my alphas to work crank baits, i have other reels to do that. Swimbaits or soft baits are fine, but a bit too slow for top water or shallow diving baits. The other reason that I tinker with the 6.8 gear on my alphas is because i have other ito reels that are 5.8 [:D]

Nice work! How much did you spend to procure the 6.8 gears? Might try it 1 day. But currently i prefer the 5.8 speed, as i feel i have been fishing too fast(bad habit thx to high speed reels) and spending less time working the lure.. But it would be excellent for top water lures.

Wah… Swapping gears. I must avoid you already! [:D]

Jokes aside, how’s the torque like after the swap?

well, fished RTC use live bait, i am not gonna use BC reel for that, and i would enjoy much more with my trusted SS700 to do the job, the ding ding ding music is more exotic than moaning sound…hope you are old and experienced enuff to appreciate the difference [:D]

as anyone would expect, i guess changing to higher speed ratio gears would definitely result in less torque and drag, given the more “fine” pinion and main gears…probably that can be compensate a little by changing to carbontex watchers but still, torque wise would be lesser…
