I received a call last week on Syed’s demise and was very shocked about it. It was unbelievable to me. I first met Syed many years ago during U1 at Tow Foo pond when he showed me for the first time what surfcasting was all about.

Strangely, Syed called me on the last week of CNY this year to wish me Gong Xi Fa Cai. Syed, never called me over the years for CNY but only for surfcasting related talks. So it was a pleasant surprised and now shocking to hear his demise.

MFN offers our condolences to Syed’s family.

Regards,
Vincent

“We (MFN forumers) are a few but together we are many. We are many among the millions of anglers yet to have their voices heard” - Majulah sukan memancing untuk negara

Hi All,

Sad…it is a great loss to the Malaysian surfcasting fraternity.

I first met Syed some 8 years ago when he came to my house and was very enthusiastically talking and poisoning me to indulge in the sports of distance casting because he knew that I was an active surf angler.

Wasn’t really keen but was amazed nevertheless when he actually demonstrated the pendulum cast and cast a fair distance of about 150m into a lombong nearby. This distance was considered miles at that time as we anglers were only able to cast around 100m to 120m on overhead thump!

I know very well that he frequently cast alone at the Empat Tin lombong for years and he must have done thousands and thousands of casts. A self taught pendulum caster and very committed guy, …“casting was his life” he once said this to me, and I can still hear him saying that to me!

He had initiated lots of things, he was the founder of the Malaysia Surfcasting Club (MSC) which Syed, Dr Kamal and I were the pioneer members some 7 years ago. Although he went his own way later, MSC would not have been where it is now without his untiring efforts.

He actually initiated photo sessions/articles featuring MSC for Rod and Line and Joran and the Club managed to get much exposure henceforth. Of course I do most of the writing for the magazine but it wouldn’t be possible without him.

Our presence in all the Angling Fairs were also possible through his earlier initiatives with Rod and Line.

Another major initiative was his collaboration with PeMM to oraganise the prestigious Distance Casting Tournaments, 5 tournaments in total! He was the former Malaysian champion with a distance of 191m and also he somewhat introduced leadhunters to the sport and soon became the Malaysia/Singapore record holder of 220.60m!

There are lots more that I would like to express here, but I guess this would suffice for all of us surfcasters/anglers to remember and cherish him by.

Salam Takziah to the family and may his soul be blessed. I will remember him always as a dear friend and the “FATHER OF SURFCASTING IN MALAYSIA”.

MSC

“THE FATHER OF SURFCASTING IN MALAYSIA” - That’s Syed Badrul. What Aznaff said is so true. Without Syed, distance casting in Malaysia would not be what it is today. Without Syed, R & l would not have articles on surfcasting. Without Syed PeMM would NEVER have organised the Distance casting competetions. Without him there won’t be a 220.60 m record. Without him, surf casters in Malaysia would still be doing the ‘overhead thump’

Rest in peace, my dear friend.

Life is so short and fragile. Lets fill it up to the max with more fishing while it lasts.

Hi Snook Hunter,

Agreed…more fun and fishing and less disagreement.
