All Good Things Must Come to An End: MFN's closing

Dear fellow forumers,

A very Happy New Year to you. This year, MFN enters its 12th year of foruming. For a Malaysian outdoor and fishing website, it is a long time. What started out as an accidental programming project for my work became, until today, the top multi-million hits fishing site in Malaysia. We are where we are because of you reading this.

Clean-up of codes, adding of new features (I believe then we were one of the pioneer outdoor forum then in Malaysia to link YM, MSN and Skype Chat. Then we added Youtube features and today FB sharing), and daily new members screening which is done manually; are some of the routine tasks.

Before the slogan of 1Malaysia appeared, we were already practising it here as exemplary Malaysians. Members also spun out and mushroomed their own website. To some, it appears like competition to MFN but in my view, it is satisfying that MFN can be an inspiration for others to grow. This is because it augurs well for Malaysian fishing and our environment if more websites and channels are out there to spread the message. If we are the impetus of it, it is indeed good for the country.

MFN is not the usual run-of-the-mill forum, where everyone hides behind the computer. People come together to fish, conduct workshop, do charity work, supported their brothers and sisters in sickness and death, competed in the prestigious U-series, debated about environmental and legal issues and encouraged the adoption of Catch & Release. As the moderator, I was in the thick and thin of it. It is indeed a very unusual but fulfilling role as in this role I have the opportunity to meet some of you from all over the country and abroad. Sometimes I feel like a politician on a campaign trail!

However, as I turn a milestone in my age this year and the priority of a new career, I have to realign certain goals in my life. Unfortunately, I am unable to give much time and energy running this beloved website. Therefore, it is with heavy heart after more than 10 years of building something from scratch to a Malaysian fishing phenomena that I announce I intend to either close The Malaysian Fishing Net or if there is a commercial interest - to sell it - so that there is a continuity somewhere. The target for me to complete this is 13 February 2012 where the next server hosting fee is due.

I take my bow in front of all of you for all your support.

Thank you.

Vincent Chin

P.S. - For those who have commercial interest to take over MFN, please email me separately at vincent@fishing.net.my. I shall be overseas for work on 16 Jan 2012 to 1 Feb 2012. Hence, will not be able to take phone calls.

It is always sad to see a good thing end but I respect your decision.
I wish to express my sincerest thanks for your great effort in creating and nurturing MFN for all these 12 years.

Bro Vincent

a million thanks to you Bro…i’ve would never met a lot of kakis if not because of this site..whatever the journey you take…we will support you…MFN for Life

Vincent,
Your creating and maintaining MFN has been the single largest positive contribution to Malaysian Fishing. Imagine the countless new friends made, fishing trips organised and of course millions of fish caught and released hopefully through the knowledge learned and disseminated through this fantastic resource.

I feel sad but at the same time massive feelings of gratitude for your persistence in providing us all with this free service, despite some of the crap you sometimes had to take over the years.

I look forward to seeing you soon. Take care my friend.

Thanks guys. You know what Izzy, you made one good point. Through catch and release we did rescue a lot of fish and some NGOs also took note of us. I remembered a Penang MP rep also wrote to me asking for opinions. Not to mention student researchers and reporters.

There was crap but again to cultivate a mature, free debate society, sometimes, despite antagonizing others who disagree with others, I must respect free speech unless it touches on religion, racism or profanity. In fact, amongst a lot of forums worldwide, we have received compliments that people are really well behaved here and with little mud slinging. That shows that we have grown and we need the right arena for it.

We shall meet soon for my future order of durian ice-cream.

Vincent

MFN is my first and, for quite sometime, sole source of info and learning
MFN put me in touch with other fishos: RK, nyamaoan, KLWong, LOTM, TJS, Unc Thomas, low profile members and many more - without which, i doubt i would’ve connected with and learnt so much from
MFN pix are and remain one of the best ways of whetting my itch to fish since i can’t fish as much or as regularly as i’d like

i am sorry MFN may no longer be our home
i am sorry some of us may no longer be in touch
i am sorry for what might have/could have but now cannot
me feelin kinda homeless …</font id=“size2”></font id=“red”>

this MFN baby thanks you, Vincent, for your selfless contributions:
i) angling/sportfishing
ii) conservation
iii) knowledge/learning
iv) this home for us gila people to be a family

all the best in your new venture [8D]

I have so many thing to say. GOOSHH!!!

Thanks Bro Vincent. Thank you

Huhuhu…(wiping away tears…) so sad…

In terms of fishing and related knowledge (and making GREAT FRIENDS), I owe it all to MFN.

THANKS, Vincent.

…the rights to brag…

It’s sad to know that MFN will be closing. Vincent did some very good work here for more than a decade. All the best in your future ventures.

wat am i suppose to say??? hmmm no comments… as far as i know, the first time i join MFN my signature sign ‘I only have 8 years of fishing experience, so must beri tunjuk ajar!’… when i still do not even know much of lure fishing n doesnt own more than 10 lures, all the way till now…

anyway, thanks bro Vincent for making all these possible, my greatest gratitude to u and MFN n it’s forummer, good luck and happy fishing everyone

this is how my signature looks like now:

I only have 14 years of fishing experience, so must beri tunjuk ajar!

My dear Vincent, I would like to offer myself as the next Webmaster to keep the community going.

I have always idolized you for your grace and altruism.

I would like to publicly beg your pardon for taking you for granted all these years.

Learning that you intend to call it a wrap, my first reaction is to thank you and heap praises upon you.

But you know people lah: we don’t appreciate our treasures until that final finite moment. And so after five minutes of retrospection, I’m getting an anxiety attack.

I don’t want this to end, sir! I don’t want to type fishing.net.my and get the message URL Not Found!

I was here as BlackFarmer from the earliest days when nobody needed to log in and everybody could call themselves as many names as they wanted and the community was plagued with ghosts and clones.

I was also one of those who ghosted and cloned myself innumerable times. It had been so fun, even if some of the things we said were willfully wicked.

More importantly, I am an angler because of this place. I learned from Yati, Ron Looi, JB, Uncle Bob, JerryC, RainbowRunner, StevenK, Tony Wee, EK Wong and many of the old guard.

Those names might be unknown to the newer folks in here, but trust me, when those fellas post something about fishing, everybody takes note.

Sure, we’re all on Facebook now. But there’s a lot of noise out there. Here, it’s just us. When we log in here, we know we are in an inner circle tucked away from the madding crowd. If we need the advice of sifu in anything that has to do with fishing, we know 110% that we can find it here.

I get your point about commercial interest. If I can round something up, pls give me a chance.

Gratefully yours,
Arnold JS Loh

Murphy’s Three-fold Law:

  1. Nothing is ever as easy as it looks.

  2. Everything will take longer than you think it should.

  3. If anything can possibly go wrong, it will.

My what a surprise, I seldom log in nowadays and when I do I just lurks and just hope to find some new fishing spot.

I am very into photography now ans in FB, and in the photography forum that I am in , it is very limited in resources both in manpower and $$ and what we do we all contribute every year.

I suggest that we can do the same here , if it is ok with Vincent please open up this option. Although I seldom log in here now I feel I still belongs here. For a start on the ball to roll I pledge Rm 100 a year here.

Nevertheless whatever the decision that you (Vincent) make I repect and I want to thank you for the joy you have add to my fishing years. Without MFN I wouldn’t start fishing again and splash a great deal of money on poisonous gears :). So a little contribution is nothing compare to the unuse gears and lures I have…haha.

Bro,thank you for your hospitality and your commitment. Its been an amazing journey.I always told my self, wish I discover this forum years back. It’s sad if this comes to and end. Thank you. You always be a HERO. Thank you to EK,BABA,RR,DOC,UT,TJS,FT,STarTRec, AC,Acheong,Major,Mike, you guys been the most amazing person that I meet in my life and been great teachers.
