Australia Fishing - Apollo Bay near Melbourne

Recently had visited Melbourne and took the chance to fishing along the Great Ocean Road.

I had fish nearly every fishable jetty and beach, here just to share some photos I took at Apollo Bay

Apollo Bay is about 2 hours drive from Melbourne airport, it is amazing how cheap you can rent a car per day in Melbourne - we got our Camry at 35 AUD per day. it is autumn so the weather is pretty cool.

When me and my wife arrived the Apollo Bay there were few fishing already, most of them caught salmon and whitings. I set my gear and begin fishing in no time.

It only takes 15 minutes before this nice snapper caught on my light gear. and it is a legal size - snapper above 27 cm is legal in Victoria.

I am very surprised that there is a tap water and a garbage trunk at the jetty and the jetty is so clean that you can actually sit on it.

after the first fish I must have catch and release more than 10 smaller snapper before the next big one - a skate took my bait. it was late and the jetty is very high. I did not have catch net with me, but here comes this fella actually climb down the ladder and pull the skate up. I gave him the fish and he can not be more pleased to accept it. told me that is the fish he is after for BBQ for the family.

it was dark but before we leave the jetty we saw seals under the jetty - this shows how clean the environment. the very next morning when we back to the Jetty again, we saw two pengiuns…

it is for sure a pleasant journey. I got to fishing also in Sydney. sorry no photos because I was there alone and my wife went shopping, did not left me the camera. I have to agree that Australia is indeed a fishing paradise.

oh, by the way, I did purchase a fishing licence last me 28 days fishing in Victoria. I will post it when I scan it.

Let me correct the pictures links for you:

I really enjoy this fishing trip because appollo bay is indeed a very nice fishing place. my wife keep asking me why when I release those 23-25 cm snappers, I am impressed because the measure tape is actually just stick on the fence so it is impossible that you will ignore it.

Great PF,

You will agree that its what a fishing pier should be … there are built in rod holders, measuring tapes are stuck on, there is a fish cleaning table with running water..etc…some places have rules put up, first aid kits, emergency telephones and life preservers…
But even more important is the fact that the people using these facilities are socially responsible so that the place is kept clean and safe. We want to see this happening in Malaysia, but can it be done?[?][:I]

Err.. walk to any hawker center here, most of the faucet are
padlocked. Only the owner has the keys. The public can’t even
get to wash their hands, unless there is one happened to be
opened and with permission from the owner.

Malaysia happens to have abundant water (that we can actually
sell to neighbouring country) and one of the lowest water rate.

Why so kiasu?

PF Bro,

Where did you guys hire the camry? 10 yrs ago remember Holden/Camry were rented at AUD90-AUD120 per day pending on engine capacity. Dont forget to tie your rod to the handrail when you fish around these areas. Have seen few surf rods ‘flied’ into the sea like javelins taken by gummy sharks.

Those jetties around Great Ocean Road are so clean and well maintained that you can even spend a nite there looking at millions of stars above when weather permit. That was what we did in the good old days.

Fish Talk Make You A Happy Man. Let’s Jig & Pop & Rock the boat! [:D]

we hired the car from Budget.

it was a pleasant surprise when we collect the car, the receptionist told us if we rent the car for over a week we got free upgrading.

we were only planned to rent it for 3 days but then decided to rent it for 9 days. that is how we got the upgrading from Hyundai to Toyota Camry.

I dont know, Tony.

civil concious is the key, you are right. it is the point. it takes time to educate ppl and at the beginning there should be some bad rabbits to be expected. but I wish such arrangement for anglers is available in everywhere over the world.
