Awesome forum

To all members:

My name is Hans van Klinken and while browsing through the web for information about Bonefish, Permit and Tarpon flies I accidently run into this wonderful Malaysian fishing forum (Fly fishing topic). I am going to Cuba in January and was preparing myself and searching for information about Bonefish and Permit and the flies to catch them of course. I fished for many species in my life but I never had the chance to fish for bones and permit before. I think I have spend too much time in arctic regions [:D].

When I got into the forum, I was so impressed and amazed that I looked through the forum topics for quite some days and I must make you all an enormous compliment. I want to give ALL participants a big compliment for participation, feedback and contributions as well. This is how I think the internet should be used.

I am NOT an expert in fly fishing and fly tying because I am still learning every day but I think I have build up a rather good knowledge and skill after 38 years fly fishing. I started fly tying in 1976, so I can say I play a little with hooks and thread and have tied a few flies as well hihihi.

I have been 3 times in Malaysia before and love that country so much that I certainly will return in recent future. (within next 5 years) I was actually so impressed about the forum that I am willing to share some of my work with you all, at least if you interesting. For those who are curious, check out my websites at: http://www.ffinternet.com/

I haven’t any knowledge about Tropical fishing or area’s but I fished/fish a lot of rivers in Europe and Canada as you can see at my websites. Most experiences I have about fly fishing in arctic regions but it must be lovely to share some information and patterns with each other.

Also a lot of thanks for sharing all your pictures with the world. I really enjoy watching them. (Mongolia and Maladives) I went through all your topics. Wow just awesome!

I have put a nice biography online for friends only, which actually is the book contribution for the series of books about Fly tiers of the World. If you read that, you have a pretty good idea about me.

Oh btw, I was searching for crab patterns when I found the Malaysian Fishing forum hihihi. Wow what a patterns you all have developed! Many of them must be something to try in Cuba hihihihi. I will copy some

Hi Hans,

We Malaysia Fly Fishers are very honored to have your compliment… Thank you very much…

And it’s our honor to have you on board…
Welcome to MFN…

As you can see from posting in MFN, Fly fishing in Malaysia are at the early stage… we are working very hard to promote this sport… and we hope you and your knowledge in fly tying and fly fishing will bring us to a higher level…

Sincerely

Dron Lee

Awesome to have someone like you browsing our forum too! Welcome

Thanks you doing great. In my home country Holland we started to get organized around 1986 (so also quite very young too) with the Dutch Association or Federation of Fly fishermen but nowadays we have almost 50 fly fishing clubs and about 10.000 people who using a fly rod either frequerntly or during holidays.

Hans, a very big welcome to our humble fly fishing forum.

Your presence here is indeed a big honour to all the local fly fishermen and fly tiers.

With regards to your compliment on the level of knowledge sharing on our forum, I think a big “thank you” must also go to dron.fly for his unselfish attitude in sharing his knowledge and also his flies.

I know of a few local tiers who have branded themselves as so called master fly tiers but IMHO, none truly deserve to be called that except for our dron.fly.

And Hans, we look forward to hearing a lot more from you in future.

"The fishing was good; it was the catching that was bad." ~A.K. Best~

Hans,

Welkom to our little fly fishing section here in MFN. We hope you’ll be able to learn as much as we can learn from your experiences in the Atlantic regions.

As much as you are yearning to fish in the tropics, we here are always dreaming of Trout, Salmon and Grayling fishing.

To mirror what Tangyp (andrew) said about our Master Dron Fly, you should ask him to show you his crickets, cockoaches, grasshoppers, mice and other very realistic flies which he has tied.

Anyway, we hope you enjoy the forum and hope to fish with you soon.

hihi Don’t worry I already talked with “Master” Dron and send him my respect.

I will open a new topic soon and will show you a little about my fly fishing and flies. Must be fun to share some my personal fishing and flies with you.

Hans

Thank you Hans,

We really look forward for your posting… we all hope to learn from you…

…and sorry about the wrong impressions that my friends post up there… I’m not any ‘Master’.. just a newbie in fly fishing and fly tying… pls do not get mis-lead by their words…

I just a bit crazy…and just simply tie, my flies are not in good proportion at all… there are still some good fly tier who just too shy to post their flies here…

I second Hans sentiment regarding this forum. It is an awesome forum.

I learnt my “fly-fishing craft” (in broader term including fly tying) targeting the salmonid, predominantly trout whether it’s a rainbow or brown. For many years I follow those so called traditional Anglo-American fly-fishing for salmonid dogma without realizing that other species can be caught with fly too.

In the last decade or so, saltwater flyfishing for bonefish, tarpon permit etc. increased it’s popularity.
Then I found out from this forum and other forum in this region that they have been catching those ‘exotic tropical’ species with fly too.

Suddenly in the past five years or so, fly fishing start gaining its strong foot hole in this region. They don’t have trout, steelhead or salmon, but adapting whole heartedly to catch whatever they have in there. Fellow fly fisherman from Malaysia, Singapore and Indonesia to my eyes is true pioneer in “FLY FISHING BEYOND THE SALMONID”. People like Pak Amin, Master Dron and many other (perhaps too many to mentioned) are in the forefront of this new frontier of flyfishing.

Guys, this is your greatest opportunity to create your own identity, create your own style of flies, your own technique of presenting the flies for those species that are totally foreign to us.
With bountiful exotic species right on your doorstep, the new world of fly-fishing it’s yours.

I was born, spent my childhood and teenage years in Indonesia, I fish these species with a line on a bamboo stick and bait. I would never imagine in my wildest dream that today these fishes are caught on a fly.
Foster Hardy would never dream that one day the derivatives of his reel would be use in the Far East to catch those exotic tropical species. Bamboo fly rod pioneered by the American fly fisherman using bamboo from Asia start making its way and gaining strong follower in Asia. Steve Abel probably starts contemplating expanding the fish graphic on his reels to include these exotic species.

Hans is a genius fly tier, he is very generous too. I’m sure he will contribute and share his wealth of knowledge in furthering the development of fly-fishing in this region. His contribution would be invaluable.

I raised my hat to all fly fisherman from this region, you are truly pioneer for “fly fishing beyond the salmonid”

“Heimwee voor vliegvissen in insulinde!!!”

P.S. Hans, your Klinkhammer is a permanent feature on my fly box, it save me from bad day on the stream many times. Thanks for this.

Tight loop,

Just googled what the klinkhammer is like and Im definitely sure it will catch fish in Malaysia. Nice stuff.

Hi Hans,

A very warm welcome to MFN and we hope you’ll come in regularly so that we can learn from you. You mentioned that you’re not an expert, but coming from the man who invented the Klinkhamer shows that you are humble as well. In our language, you are a indeed “sifu” (a real master.)

I’m most happy to tell you that I am an ardent fan of the Klinkhamer, ever since I learned to tie it from Oliver Edward’s VCD … had to order almost everything online, from powersilk to patridge klinkhamer hooks, ploypro yarn and superfine dubbing. My tying is amateurish to say the least, but the klinkhamer is my goto dry fly in the small hill streams I sometimes fish. I’ve had some success with it on small local fishes and need to learn more on how to present and fish the klinkhamer.

I’ve even tried the klinkhamer in the estuaries to catch small archer fish with some success, tho’ I do not really know why … maybe it looks like an insect thats just fallen from the mangroves.

Thanks for the Klinkhamer, Hans…the flyfishing world is defifitely better for it.

Hello Hans,

It is indeed an honor to have the inventor of the Klinkhammer with us in our forum! Welcome!!

I always have some Klinkhammers in my dry fly box because i like the way it looks like an insect emerging from its case before breaking out of the water. I’m glad to report that i was able to catch a few grayling in mongolia on the CDC(cream) post Klinkhammer as well.

By the way, pardon my inquisitiveness, but what does the hammer in the name of your fly stand for?

Hello Hans,Good to have you ,a legend, on this humble forum and we are deeply honored .I frequently visit the Singaporean forum as well, quite interesting i must say. It’s flyfishingsg.proboards38.com.Cheers,Yong.

subang

wow, I feel flattered now hihihi. Just kidding [:D] I am not into forums frequently but your forum really did and do something with me and my hands really itching. I can see clearly that it’s more a forum of friends, with lots of respect to each other, even to newcomers. I like that very much because it is not easy to tie your first fly all by yourself.

Hans

upppsss…he’s the inventor for that klinkhamers…

I got my first few of these patterns bought from friend and got a couple from Nick(Tacklebox) and begun to do sort of things with it. Tied several of those-various modifications and gave all the best one to friends for testing.; leaving me with slighlty weird looking ones; i even have some with V-ribs as a body; …pity just realise i never had chance to test it myself…back to tying table then.

Dear Hans,We also do dry fly fishing in small mountain streams here and i am sure some of us have used klinkhammers and cane rods for catching the mysterious malayan hill trout which looks and behaves like the trout you are familiar with.Believe it or not!If you are going for bonefish try not to spend too much time and effort tying crab flies because in some locations they sometimes are not as effective as the yellowish chartreuse clouser fished on a clear full sinking line.Good luck.

subang

Yeah I think I have seen those. It was far upstream when I walked into one of the parks. The water was crystal clear coming from the mountains(my rod was in the car that time hihihi) I tried to fish a few times but without any luck. Had some problems with the heat too. It actually was real funny I felt like cooked on the Malay peninsula but feel real comfortable in Sabah. I guess the big mountain cool the air down a bit.

Hans,

Do you know any forum that you would strongly recommend which have many good fly pattern to share…???
