Last weekend I was at Koh Samui for a holiday and they did the same thing also at the beautiful beach side restaurant. They brought me the “red snapper” and lo-and-behold, I recognized it to be red tilapia and the waitress was pushing to me it was from the sea, etc. It was definitely a cultured tilapia.
Then I told her to show me the “white snapper” which turned out to be farmed siakap, from the uniformed size of the fish.
Surprisingly, the mixed it (red tilapia and red snapper) quite openly along the tourist stretch restaurants.

Vincent, that’s not red tilapia, that’s a ‘ang koi’(ikan merah). Indeed they are sea farmed fish and is widely used at restaurant, even in malaysia esp Klang and KL. Yup, those ‘ang cho’ dish you order at KL and Klang rest are actually ‘ang koi’(do check the next time you order[:D]). As for how safe farmed fish to human ? I am not sure but at least i got some information on those fish farmed at P Ketam( http://www.kurauking.com/journal/fishing/2009/06/26/is-pulau-ketam-farmed-fish-safe-to-eat/ )
That is why i prefer to go to my ‘regular joint’ when i wanna eat fish, those restaurant i go to serve fishes caught from the ‘wild’…[:D]

1)Wild Ang Cho(jenahak)= ><Rm25.00 per kgs and not enough to meet local market demand…[:D]
2)Farmed Ang Cho = ><Rm20.00 per kgs and also not enough to meet market demand
3)Ang Koi(ikan merah) = ><Rm9.00 per kgs and easy to breed, enough to meet local market demand…[:D]

In South Sea near Terminal 3 airport. Paid RM140 for a live 1kg grouper, its not even the red one but the normal brown spotted kerapu. It was farmed kerapu cause all the fish were the same size in the aquarium. I told the guy this type of kerapu is plenty in the sea. He said its from Sabah, yeah right! When i was in Labuan i paid RM8 for 2 kerapu at 2 kg each.
Moral of the story, next time before ordering ask how much is it for the live and dead ones.
4X4, ang koi is not mangrove jack. Ang koi is Malabar Snapper(lutjanus malabaricus). Ang koi is also known as striped snapper or ikan merah…[:D]
Mangrove jack is ‘Chiah Chor’ in hokkien…[:D]

eh, I read ur article a while back.. But I'm still wondering, those commercial pay pond like sealion and the pandamaran pond, their fish are from pulau ketam as well right? Are they safe to eat?
Hi wp1, unfortunately not all sealion(or other payponds) fish come from Pulau Ketam. When P Ketan farm fish supply runs low, paypond owners will buy their fishes from all over Malaysia and Thailand fish farm…[:p]

thats not good now is it?? but the fish sold in restaurants, you won’t know where are they from as well.. probably some fish farm in thailand who feed crap to their fish..

there used to be a paypond (fish farm turned paypond) that i go to in Sg Petani where the owner feeds the siakaps there with kembung & other small baitfishes WHOLE. not blended/crushed/minced but whole. the results are evident in the fishes. they not only fight better when hooked, but taste mighty delicious as well. every evening he has to fork out about RM 800-1K to feed ONE pond! imagine catching ur own fish for dinner almost every week! it was great!
somehow later economics(and reality) got the better of him and then he started to feed them crap & pellets & what nots as the cost to feed them whole baitfishes soon inflated to an unrealistic/insustainable amount.
Vincent, thank God they didn’t you ask you to do any identification parade for a criminal case. The Police would definitely have arrested the ‘culprit’ [:D][:D][:D]
