I think it’s a good idea to have a separate thread to discuss about bamboo rod. Because ah, not all fly rodder prefer bamboo rod (maybe only pipel like me who seems to want to know anything about fly fishing lah [:D]. Must do that la when beginning what. And I have some appreciation towards the European fly fishers).
So anyone with info or experience on this type of rod can contribute here lah. Master Yong can contribute most here since he not only have experience fishing with rod but also building one.
For a start, where can we get this type of rod ah?
When out fishing yesterday finally with the cane flyrod I acquired recently. What a revelation! The feel of cane is totally different from carbon fibre.Sweet and alive whether in casting or playing fish.Rod used is a 4wt. 2pc 6ft.9ins.Now I am totally hooked…hiyah.Pokai lah!I definitely recommend it,bro.
U got me both excited and scared there. Excited to hear how syiok it is to use cane rod but when u mentioned pokai…[:D]. Where you got that rod anyway? How much?
Waaaa… Master Yong cane rod that good meh? We should meet lah. Eh why not we meet this weekend at Tacklebox and we can all see and try some cane rod[:D] Can or not[?] Anyway, what is the lightest weight for cane rods ah[?]
Hi…you can display cane rods and you can consider it classic tackle. But they are lovely to cast and fish with.In addition they are all hand built and no two are alike.A long time ago I was asked why I took up flyfishing.I do all other forms of angling and I am no purist.Fishing is challenging in all it’s forms. But flyfishing is very much hands on.You cast the fly line to deliver the fly that you [creatively] tied, the line is hand stripped inch by inch…you know what I mean, lah.Cane rods just heightens all those sensations. And they are absolutely gorgeous to look at.
Anyway you can get cane rods from $300 up to $15,000.Your choice, bang.

Hows about starting and leading a group of rotan fellas here. There is an active group already in the S’pore FFC as you know. Your use of bulu lemang, for example, is interesting and should be developed. The Japanese rod builders have been using their local bamboo for years and who knows, one of our local grasses may be as good as tonkins.
Master Yong, if we all start to use buluh (not bulu) lemang, then I’m afraid the lemang will naik harga loh hehehe.
Anyway, as a kid I remember one type of buluh which people in kampung use to make traditional kite (wau bulan or something). This type of buluh is preferred for kite making since its strong but flexible. Pity I cannot remember the name. Must go back to kampung lah and ask the folks…

Masta,
I am sure dr.no is not that kiasu lah. I am sure he realised that although he owns tacklebox that does not mean that he owns fly fishing. BTW, we have been fairly business friendly. But we also have been fairly independent. So very balanced lah. You cannot expect we say everything sold in the market is always good and DIY is crap all the time innit. I am sure he’ll understand.
