bamboo rod

hai,
first i am sorry coz i only have interest, very interest, in flyfishing but have no gear. what i want to know is, is there any of MFN members out there that making a bamboo rods, i mean split bamboo rods. i now so interest in making one but don’t know if local bamboo could fit the criteria. now i am learning on how to make the rod, and to add the twist i just want to use local bamboo. if this project could be done maybe i could sell it cheap. now i am working on rulers to determine the harvest able local water dwellers. i don’t know when it will done coz the information is too limited. thanks

Saratoga,

If you serious about making a bamboo fly rod, contact Master Young. He has done couple of it, for those who has cast it, gave very positive feedback about it, after all, he is the master[:)].

But I personally think that you have to take up flyfishing first before you can make one, so that you can familiarize with all the rod action and it will be easy to build a rod base on what action you want it to be. At least like you said, we can get cheap bamboo rod from our local builder. BTW Saratoga can be a good fly rod name[;)]

alpocot,u r right, saratoga fly rod series… nice name

hai,
how can i contact Master Young. i do want to make some rod with local bamboo. i have some hint on which bamboo i should use. in Kelantan there is a bamboo called buluh duri, it is used to make kites and wau bulan. it flexibility is great, the tensile and shear strenght is high for a bamboo and it also use by the local as a pole rod.the second choice is buluh minyak the third is buluh tebing. i don’t know if anyone has other choices, if does please give me advice. thanks.

Saratoga, I think buloh duri seems to be best choice. Been comparing the 3 myself. But can be heavy also amongst the 3. A Kelantanese yourself[?]

Pellet Fly

hai,
thanks pellet fly. i shall find that type. but for the mean time, i shall choose any bamboo that i could find. i don’t know the result but for my passion i shall try by making the slow taper first. coz this type of taper don’t need too much planning and scrapping the material. the first type i want to try is the square rod first, then the more decent angle later. thanks

I know this is an old thread…2 years old actually but I’m also interested in building my own rod from local materials… How about buluh pancing ikanb(or something like that)? Heard from my late granduncle and late grandfather that the old generation of Haruan, sepat & puyu fishers from the kampung use a type of local bamboo that’s light. I have seen these people with their very long poles (nearly about 15 feet long, cycling in the evenings off to the padi fields and streams in a group. I don’t know what is the name of the bamboo they used but that is the one I’m thinking of using.

How is Master Yong contactable?
