Sometimes I going fly fishing for Tarpon at my village, there are no problem to land tiny tarpon, but the problem start occur if a kilo size tarpon take the flies. Tippet will broken “kaput” and spoiled the “feel” of running Tarpon even there I used tippet 10lb floro line.
I read in some article in R&L and Pancing, some fly expert used as low as 4lb for tippet… how they do it?
Fuh! I thought bigger #lb or steel wire will make the flies become bad presentation and reduce chances of strikes? But I should now there are no matter about #lb for tarpon tippet.
I am pretty new with Tarpon fishing but I used a special knotless braided leader (the same as I designed 25 years ago after lost a huge salmon) and it got the final test in Cuba. I had no breaks in this leader system in 25 years and no break with tarpon either… as tippet it all depends on the size of the tarpon I guess. The biggest Tarpon I caught was only 128cm, still a baby tarpon (I think hihi) but for me it was already a very big fish. I have a special connection between tippet and leader but most of the experienced guides use a loop to loop connection started from 60LBS fluorcarbon tipped directly at leader and 80-100lbs shock tippet in front. I was afraid this thick tipped would scare the fish away but it didn’t… I will publish the story on how to make this leader next year!
