Bib/lip for DIY lure

I 've a lure in progress but have no idea how to make a bip/lip. I’ve already search the topic related but not found. I would thanks if s/body/ otais can show me how to make a bip/lip and what’s material suitable that we can get around ?

Thanks

The preferred material for crankbait lips will be transparent polycarbonate sheets. They are sold as construction sheets for awnings and such with some Signage shops using it as well. Other material will be Stainless Steel Sheets, Aluminum or Micrata (circuit board laminate fiberglass sheets). Beware of acrylic sheets as they are brittle and will break easily.

Once you have the material it’s basically just sawing or cutting with a pair of shears the bib shape out and then file to final shape and touch it up with fine sandpaper.

Their are several suitable materials that can be used for lips, each has its own advantages and disadvantages:

Aluminium sheet
Strong, will not chip, can be polished.
Heavy, opaque, scratches easily.

Circuit board
Light, durable, will not chip.
Opaque.

Acrylic sheet
Transparent, cheap, readily available.
Chips easily, snaps easily, scratches easily.

Polycarbonate sheet
Transparent, durable.

The most popular choices amongst professional lure builders are polycarbonate and circuit board. But for personal use there is no real reason why any of the above cannot be used. Some even use old CD material. But why start with inferior material, try to find some polycarbonate, try glaziers for scraps etc.

I first make a pattern/template. I draw the lip on my computer, print off a sheet and spray glue to the lip material. Cut to the line. If you chose to draw your template by hand, fold the paper in half, draw one half and cut out the profile. When unfolded, you not only have a symmetrical pattern, you also have a centre line. Symmetry is vital to the operation of your lure.

Scuff the part of the lip that will be glued and/or drill one or two small holes. This will improve adhesion of the glue and minimize the chances of the lip pulling out or being dislodged by a collision with a rock.

Cutting the slot for the lip is critical. If not straight, the lure will not swim true. The lip slot is best cut before the carving and shaping process, as it is easier to see if it is straight or not. If you insert a steel rule or strip of some sort, this will magnify the angle and enable you to see if it is straight or not.

Choice of glue is not something I want to get involved with, but epoxy is always a good choice. Also when to fit the lip is widely debated in the forums. If this is your first lure, then obviously it will need to be fitted prior to paint, so that it can be tested. No point in spending time painting a pretty lure if it does not swim properly.

This list and description is far from exhaustive or definitive, just a few of my own thoughts on the subject. I am sure their will be many more additions to this thread, some even conflicting with my ideas.

No sure what you mean yocox. You want to carve the cupping of a deep diver lip? Those are usually molded or heat bend with a form.
