Flicker,
Nice one too, mind sharing your experience catching this one? Especially on baits, rigs and condition.
Thanks.

Aznaff,
I had caught a Ray shark the day before (about half the size of shoreangler’s above) and cut it into “chops” for bait. I didn’t know what to expect - suddenly the rod (in a rod holder in the ground) had a huge tug and bounced stragiht back. Chewed through my 20lb line - shark. Time to rejig so tied on a wire trace and a running sinker setup.
Re-casted and suddenly some Brumby’s came up behind me. Brumbies are wild horses and can be dangerous. My only way to get away from them is to walk in the sea - talk about caught between the devil and the deep blue sea. haha. So shark in the water and Brumbies on land with me in the middle - sigh.
Suddenly my rod (now in my hand) had a huge tug - a quick set and I was on. After a 15 minute fight had the shark on the beach. It was too heavy for my line to pull it in once the waves have retreated, so I grabbed it by the tail - it turned and believe it or not missed my fingers by about a couple of inches. Didn’t realise they were so flexible. After my initial shock I just ran for the shore before the next wave.
In the meantime ,thank goodness the Brumbies have disappeared.
Night was warm, no moon with light breeze. One more thing - when I gutted it later, I found my first hook in it’s throat. So they don’t stop feeding after being hooked. It’s got am impressive set of teeth.
I was quite impressed with the performance of the Abu 443 Atlantic Zoom (it was 20 years old then) and the D.A.M 401 with 20lb mono.
Fraser Island is the biggest sand island in the world about 3 hours drive north of Brisbane. It is about 130 miles long and is located at the southern end of the great barrier reef. It is considered as one of the fisherman’s heaven in Australia. The whole island is a park and a permit is required to get on the island. 4 wheel driving only and great scenery and wildlife can be found. Tailor, giant sting rays, sharks, bream and lot’s of other fish available.

I caught a 6.0ft black tip shark before during night fishing in Biscayne Bay, Miami. The shark gave me the best 30minutes fight of my life and left me with a back pain that lasted two days. Too bad i didnt take photos casue i was too scare to bring it up and cut it loose near the rocks.
You need a strong wire strand for this kind of fishing. Oh, please release them after photo shoot.
Flicker and Snook Hunter,
Thanks for the insight, what an experience…I can only read in awe!!!
MSC
Aznaff,
I am sure you will catch a big one if you keep at it. One tip though - if you want to catch a big shark use a big bait like a whole squid. Don’t forget the big hook too.
Good luck

Flicker,
When I surf fish I don’t usually target the sharks and worse still I seldom use wire traces.
Even when I use big baits for the biggies, normally either the duri, belukang or the rays will grab the baits first.
So far in my experience, when fishing the biggies, seldom do my mono traces get nipped indicating that neither the sharks nor the barracudas are around…or rather the barracuda prefers live baits instead.
Well, will always carry on trying…catching is secondary, to me the sea breeze, waves crashing, the serenity is bliss!!!..he he.
MSC
Anzaff,
spot on mate - fishing is getting out there and enjoying the whole experience. I don’t specifically target sharks either and only use wire trace when I get busted.
I don’t normally even use any trace (mono or otherwise - just being lazy) and I haven’t lost any fish apart from those with sharp teeth. Gang hooks are popular here. Someone (can’t remember who) told me that no one else in the world uses gang hooks - wonder if it is true?
In surf fishing you never know what bites - from small rockling to giant ray. Makes life exciting.
Where do you normally surf fish?

To target big fish from the shore first U must mentally prepare to have zero catch on your trip. Patience is one important thing. Second is U must get the right tackle n the right technic to fight them out if there is a hookup. Third…big bait n the right rig with steel wire trace for good bait presentation is a must. Fourth…Fish on a good current movement incoming tide gave U a better chance of catching them.
For Malaysia n Singapore coastline, Stingray is one of the common fish around. They come pretty close to shallow water on sandy area at certain time of the year. Other fish like cobia, shovelnose shark or big marine catfish(Jahan) do come close also but rare.
