Casting Jigs

Hi All,

I know for sure that the technique of casting jigs (sometimes enhanced with feathers and all)from the beach is very effective to hook trophy fishes in places like Cape Hatteras, Australia, Namibia etc.

I am a bottom fishing surf angler most of the time… being lazy and trying to avoid the sun as much as possible, he he, but ocassionally I do try my luck on casting jigs when the biting is less (those 50g to 100g ones). For this I will use my light tackle 12 footer rods which is much lighter. You could lose an arm if you use the beach rods after the 10th casts, he he.

But never seems to catch anything so far…even if I hook a 1kg fish on jigs from the beach/rock would already make me a very happy man!

Just wondering … is there a better and effective way to catch fish using lures from the beach. Of course I don’t want to use the same excuse of “this place where got fish one!!!..or better still, this place is overfished lah!!1” he he.

Any tips from the masters…

me havnot tried da heavy metal jigs but on lures catches r highya if u focus on da rocky areas..howeva to baitcast using a mh surf rods wud make u a popeye da sailoman tut tutttttttt hehehe

cheers..

Aznaff bro,
Theres 2 type of shore jigging…one is the american style using bucktail(leadhead jig dressed with feathers/hair material) jig wch is popular in state stripper or surf scene and the other one is a japanese style shore jigging, using a jig(metal slab, like the one they use in deep sea jigging but in a bit smaller profile).

I am a bit sceptical bout the first one, maybe never had a chance to try it yet.Btw,the jig head bucktail for me do not have much action and feature to attract fish compare to the latter one, unless u re fishing in remote place such as sudan, namibia, gambia or the famous skeleton coast;but most probly will catch fish in structured covered and rocky area.

As for the japanese style of jigging, actually is same like uk/european style of what they called spinning. Here when they say spinning, its include using spoon, spinner and a metal jig. What i ve found out that here, more ppl like to use those lure compare to plug. The fish are usually pollack, seabass and mackerel.Usually done from beach, breakwater and any rought ground effectively.I prefered using jig compare to spinner since its heavy and easy to cast far-far away…heheheh…hence i can reach the schooling mackerel when they are far from shore and can get to the bottom faster when they feeding deep for sand eels or sprat…and catch more from other mackerel basher…if the current or wind are too strong, spinner and spoon become verry hard to cast and if possible, still have a problem to get down deep to the fish.Using jig,i can choose the level i want to fish, deep, midle or top just by adjusting the cranking speed.

Other than jig, theres one spinner that really2 effective,do some google on ‘DEXTER WEDGE’.

Look for a jig that have a slim profile with an angle at the side, which will move erratically on the fall on each pause of the crank and jerk..Here,we usually cast and let it sink for …let say 10 sec depending on how deep the swim that u fish and at what depth that u want to fish. Then start cranking and jerking…unlike the deep sea jigging that using vertical movement…this kind of shore jigging more to horizontal or side movement of the rods…dont use your surf rods laa…use a proper fixspool reel and a spinning rods…length usually between 9-11 footer is confotable enuff laa…dont need 12-16 footer…the longer the more resistant meh…quickly get tired…maximum cast weight of the rods that i am comfotable with is 60g.30g-50g jig is enuff…no need 100g.

I think this kind of fishing can produce good result in malaysian water since not many of our fishos like to used the jig and spinner from shore. The flash from the jig and spinner can easily be detect by fish from the distance.I am thinking of kuala marang break water…sure got kerapu, siakap, tetanda one there…or at least a barracuda sirip itam…just try to stock up a decent quanttity of jig and spinner in that kind of area…try to get any cheap one with silver, chrome or any light reflecting material…u sure will loose a lot of jig at first…after a few while u’ll get used to it and will loose less tackle…cheerrrrss…(u must reply back with “good man”-its sound more irish…)

Hi rapalajoe,

You are definitely a good man…thanks a million, very informative.

What’s your best catch on jigs from the shore ya? Mind sharing the tales on how you did it?

Thanks again, good man.

I never cought any best size fish using jig or spinner here since i am more onto bass using plug. The things is ,i observe here…most people tend to do a lots of surf/beach fishing using long2 rods like u all surf guys doing in malaysia laa…in term of lure fishing most of them will use spoon or jig like abu toby and abu rocket which is generally known as spinner locally. The jig use mostly are small2 jig…20gm,28gm,30gm,35gm and 40gm.The advantage of jig over spoon like abu toby is its heavy and more stream line in shape to cast far and to get them in to the deep water.I like to try new things and do experiment…so i used plugs, pencil bait and soft plastic which is not regularly use locally.I used jig mostly for a mackerel and pollock.I do use them but not as regular as i am using plug and softies.I think not everybody will think that a nice species can be cought from a beach without structure using lure. The key is to be in the right time and at the right place. You can refer to the thread in bm sec,air tawar, gewang pantai by mr kamachan.I believe at the right place and at the right time some species will come feeding close to the beach.Since theres a lots of pukat/jaring/net takraw in our water close to shore in malaysia…you have to find the right place which is free from all this stuff…i think theres still a lots of place back there in malaysia…my favorite timing is malam…selepas subuh and senja since theres hi chances of the lunker will patrol the shallow close to the beach in search for food.I bet theres a chance of getting croaker/jewfish/ibu gelama in our water such as in oz from shore using this technique.http://www.spanyid.com/product.htm
Even its proven by local fishos that a species like golden trevaly and pompano can be cought in our water from shore.Bro Onn got cobia what in teluk ketapang(sounds like in cape haterras or key florida la plak)…the fish is there…but like what i said before, the right time at the right place…and the game is more active…keep on casting…not like beach fishing la bro…cast and wait…thats why they re using special rodshttp://www.f-daiko.com/lure/salt-premier_b-j/premier_b-j.htm
light enuff and wont easily make you tired to cast.Cheerrrss…

My first seabass on shore jig…not big…arround 2 lb er…

Pollock…this one a 6 lb er,got with softies…but easily enticed by jig or spinnerr most of the times…

garfish on dexter wedge…

Mackerel on Maria Chase…another species that most of the time will whack a jig or spinner…

rapalajoe,

Cool…will try again lah!

Hope to hook some barracuda etc. this time.

Thanks, good man.

Good topic here!!!

Been doing these jigs casting from shore in Norway; loads of fun and loads of lost jigs too. Have been trying in Kerteh River mouth and even in Freshwater ponds ec. But no luck yet.
