Chenderoh Feb 20, 07

Me and MFN-forumer-who-will-be-named-upon-receiving-permission visited Chenderoh today and employed the services of En Yusri.

Met some LKG affiliates who rented Cikgu Zaki’s ‘rolls royce’ which could comfortably fit 5-6 casting anglers and have enough room for boatman and a coolerbox to store ‘forbidden water’.

In brief:

  • Heavy rain night before
  • Water 1 metre below maximum
  • Water choppy
  • Less then a dozen rises spotted
  • Only one Sebarau feeding frenzy spotted (in open water)
= NO FISH HOOKED UP OR LANDED (Niama!)

More briefs briefly:

  • Mr L, Nepalese who speaks FLAWLESS Bahasa Melayu, is a fantastic boatman who is eager to please his clients. No park and sleep nonsense. He just takes us to one spot after another.

Please ask for his services and bring him gifts or tip him (yes you cheapskates - EVEN IF YOU DON"T CATCH FISH). We need more people like him

  • This is my first dam fishing experience. It was great. Fresh air, mist, cool breeze, warm and clear water, no sound of civilisation (unfortunately for us, no sound of feeding frenzy)

  • To those who have never seen a sebarau frenzy: You don’t know what you’re missing.

  • Yusri has good boats, and lousy boats. We had the luxury of experiencing the latter. It was leaky and couldn’t really take the weight of two anglers + boatman.

  • Water would splash into the boat. My pants was soaked. Wet underwear causes wet scrotum and anus - not comfortable for fishing.

  • I want to do another trip in early march. Will try to book services of Mr L (that’s what he said his name was…).

HNH,
Me(1st time there) and 2 of my friend was there yesterday…using Cikgu Zaki’s rolls royce before we change to a smaller boat.Which boat are you in??Were you that young guy at the dock[;)]
If you saw this guys, then i have meet you.. .

Orang minyak with his sebbie..he’s the lucky one who caught all 2.

Caught only 2 sebbie’s in the morning..which were released.

the beauty Chenderoh.

The rising of sebbie’s was less and harder to spot in the morning due to wind and waves but were more likely to strike lures and spinners if you can find them, there were more risings in the afternoon but harder to get them to strike. We spend more than an hour chasing a schools of sebbie’s with no strikes.. .one strange thing is,there were no toman rises.I’ll sure be going there again.. .[:)]

Mr VB,

Yes, I’m the young punk at the jetty. You guys look like fun people.

Next time we meet up, you’ll have to tell me more stories about China Dolls putting up in Zaki’s chalets (they look more like huts for 1pax max though).

Look forward to fishing with you fine people soon!

ps. You know the two guys with the electric motor? My god… their buddy in pink shirt was so loud that I could hear him swearing about “BOH HU #%^&@#”. I think I saw them landing something.

Bro HNH,
Nice to meet you and a Happy New Year[:D] and you can call me VB and loose the MR[;)]
Although we just caught 2 sebbie but it was a very enjoyable trip for the 3 of us..were
laughing at each other for the whole day[;)]
I didn’t see you guys after that..[:)]
That 2 guys you were referring too was waiting for the boat since 6am in the morning …so i understand their frustration[;)],should be a sebbie cause i saw them chasing a school in the morning ..
When do you fish normally??Weekdays or weekends.. .

Nice to meet you Mr. Hang Nga Hu. Sad to note that you did not manage to land anything on that day. I think it was due to the strong winds and choppy waters which made it very difficult to locate the fish.

Another thing, for Sebarau, I notice that you must be very accurate in your casting and need to cast fast enough before they dive into the deep again. Also the early morning sebarau tend to be more hungry than the afternoon ones. Dont bother trying to cast for sebarau during the midday sun coz they are only taunting you! (As Vincent Bok and Nique found out) heh heh!

Anyway, next time we should plan a trip with more boats. This way, we can surround the sebbies which will ensure that at least one boat will get some hookups when the sebbies rise.

Better a Pedukang than no fish at all!

If you are suggesting a fishing gang-bang, I have to say its absurd but I LIKE IT!

Now to rally the troops!

PS. MFN-member-who-won’t-be-named-until-he-give-green-light who was with me in Chenderoh that day, went again today and he hit some nice fishes. I guess we were not so lucky on Tuesday because:

  1. Fish too busy checking out bull run on KLSE
  2. Rainy season just started.

SO. We might want to consider March, the expected Ill Nino dry season before the wet Cheng Beng early April. Yes, we Taiping people know our rain [:D]

Bro’s,
I’m might be going there again on the middle of next month..around 12th-16th.
Maybe we can fish together[;)].. .
Revenge!!![}:)]

[}:)]

Hang and Vincent,

Do you think it is advisable to bring own boat from KL? Is the water safe for a fiber boat or there are lots of floating timber or tree trunks like in Kenering that will pose hazards to frail fiber boats?

If I book Zaki’s resort or fishing boat, how do I contact him. Thanks for the info. and look forward to see you guys there.

Bro NMF,
You can use your own boat there.. .and its quite clean[;)]
i don’t have Cikgu Zaki’s number yet,but “Orang Minyak” can help you on that..[:)]

That day our boatman hit a tree stump that was submerged just below the surface. I was sitting on the tip of the boat and almost fell over. Niama!

Bro’s ,
Even Titanic sank[:D]!!We will never be too sure.. .must always keep on our guard on safety[;)]
I have been to Air Ganda,B.Merah and i think Chenderoh is the safest lake in between them.
Thats just my 2cents. .

Well said. Pray for safety.

Get a smaller engine and bring more shear pins may save the day.

Any good spot for landing and parking the transport. Hope to go in several cars with few boats. Organise a “Gang bang”, borrow Hang’s language.

Hi VB and guys,

I’m the one HNH referring to. Having been going there for 3 times for half day session … hehehe, since only 45 min or less than 40 km from Taiping. VB, sorry didnt get to shake your hand, didnt know you guys were there.

This morning water level was very high submerged 3/4 of the parking area. Not too many rises (boiling) cp to 2 days ago. Bit windy so didnt manage to spot any toman. Boatman and myself only managed to land 4 sebaraus. Thurday was quite good, not so windy like last Tue, water level moderate, quite a few splashes here and there. Managed to entice 5 hits on sebarau but only 1 hooked up and landed. Supposed retrieving too fast causing hitted and missed (thought I was casting for gts/talang). 2 hits on toman only 1 landed due to poor hook setting. Saw 1 toman making u-turn right under the boat … gggreeerrr.

Referring to No More Fishing query on bring own boat, would think it will be better to hire the boat together with the boatman if you are not familiar with the area. Understand from boatman Mr L thru conversation this morning, many boats and propellors have been damaged due to submerged tree stumps. In fact right in front of Sinaran Cahaya Chalets (hope I named correctly), the boatman have to manourver the boat slowly when going aft school of sebaraus from a distance due to underwater tree stumps. Cost for hiring a boat with boatman ranging from $100-$180 depend on size of the boat so quite reasonable. In away good to ensure chalet owners can sustain their cost and kampung folks can become fishing guides rather than netters so win-win situation for all.

Will upload the photos later.

we already tag the tree stumps wit floating bottle,
its the cheapest float… hahaha…
but, the villager usually kidnap some of the bottle to replace their net’s float… hampess!!!
so, dun get too close to floating bottle if you guys use your own boat…

poppercaster,
the chalet name is sinaran bayu.. not sinaran cahaya… hahaha…
Mr L that u guys mentioned before also known as Chantek…

i’ve been trying to invite local fisherman to become fishing guide…
but, they are very demanding…
they ask me RM50.00 per day…
imagine if i have to absorb the cost… sure i’ll gulung tikar very soon…

Dear Yusof,

I have to commend your effort to educate the locals to become fishing guides. Unfortunately, many of them still do not realise the full potential of being involved in the tourism business and the long term and continuous benefits it will bring them, in terms of revenue.

When I was in India many years back for Mahseer fishing, the local government managed to even convinced the local poachers to become local guides. As a guide, their job is something to be proud of: they don’t take anything from the water anymore but share their knowledge. And for sharing their knowledge and guiding anglers like us (without even needing to set a net in water to destroy the local habitat) they earn good money. It is also something proud they share stories about their life, their kampung and so forth.

Hopefully, as more and more MFN gang go to these local places, we can show them the potential in eco-angling/tourism.

Bro PC,
Didn’t know that you were there too.. .it would be fun[;)]
Should have guess that there’s more MFN forumers when HNH ask bout LKG’s at the docks, but the water was too tempting as there was a lot of sebbie’s splashes [:D]
Hope to meet you soon.. .Are you going to Chenderoh next month with HNH?
I might be going there mid of next month.[:)]

Just some photos taken from half day sessions during CNY.

New bridge crossing Tasik Raban upstream of Chenderoh leading to Grik.

Catch of the day. Mama toman caught with rapala deep diver released unharmed.

Mr L or Chantek with kg size sebarau. I think he prefers people calling him L than Chantek … hehe

Couple of sebaraus for half day session not too bad. Still worth it with beautiful scenaries.

Hi VB Bro,
Not sure whether can make it mid March. Tons of work waiting to clear, will let HNH know. Hope to catch up with you guys up north.

One more thing to add. For those roti canai lovers, remember to look out for a mamak stall before the exit to the jetty on the main raod. If you are coming from Kuala Kangsar exit, right after the traffic light showing right turn to Tasik Chenderoh, go further you will notice one sign board showing 75km from Grik and 18km from Lenggong. Roti canai stall just right opp on you right. Fresh roti canai make on the spot serves with hot curry … taste heavenly. One of the many reasons for going back to Chenderoh, whack the sebaraus and tomans not forgetting roti canai too … hehe.

Remember bag limit and takes only what you need. Release the rest.
