COD ALMIGHTY !!

The cod season, started off quite well with some great cods measuring from 70-90 cm in length and some thumper weighing at 20-25 lbs.

Both Sunny and I, headed down to the upper Yarra river to fish for this beautiful cod. Having such a huge appetite, part of their diets includes ducks, yabbies, carp, bony bream and the list goes on.

Reached the spot about 2pm and was greeted by wild kangaroos and the lovely chirping of the Kookaburras. That was some hike down the Yarra river and thanks to Sunny for taking me the the hardest and longest way mate !!!..ehehe no heart feelings..ehehe..

Without this fantastic bloke, i wont have this Murray cod onto my aussie fish list !! Once again, thanks a lot Sunny for making this possible !!..

I’ll allow the pics to do the narrating !!

First cod was caught on a Bardi grub bait and this whooper tipped the scale of 10lbs on the bogas

He was revived and released to grow mighty !!

Follow on by another beautiful cod

One of the juvies that is not shy to take those huge bardi grubs which hardly could fit its mouth (or maybe)

Another one caught by Sunny on a Cod Botherer (Ausspin lures) tipping the scale of 8.5lbs on the boga. He measured at 64cm in length. Beautiful healthy fish, with those bright yellow green hue to it.

Followed up by me with another 2 beautiful cods..

Thanks Sunny, it was definitely a COD day !!..thank god the brownies arent out there !!..ehehe cheers mate..

Congrats to you guys..
The location at kangaroo’s state? I mean it is at Australia?

So big and beautiful cod there..
How they action when you fight with them?
Cod will jumping on top the water right..?

patogen bro,

yeaps its in the land down here in Australia. Im in Melbourne btw

Murray cod is a native species in Australia and it could grow up to 5ft in length and weigh almost 115kg. Its Australia’s biggest freshwater fish that can grow quite fast in a short time.

The cod doesnt perform any aerial jumps but just have strong runs once they felt they are hook. A first strong and blistering run and occasionally short runs in between battle. Most of the time it will give in after a few seconds in the early fights. As cods loves the snags of fallen horizontal trees, hiding below willow trees, its a challenge to get them out from the snags..

FT bro,

Thanks.. well they look exceptionally different from the barras. They are very territorial predator and eat almost anything that comes in his path. They have huge jaws and have tiny pin teeth on both top and bottom jaws. Those teeth are really rough and can cause some serious injuries. Their gill plates are also huge and uses them to crush they pray before consuming it.

This Cods loves heavy snags and overhanging willow trees. Uses them to ambush pray and home to some real huge cods !! Can be consider to be one of the best tasting freshwater native species after the Macquarie Perch. They have small and fine scales and those paddle tail gives them the power to run but doesnt last long before they give in.

The coloration on its body is really beautiful if you look up close. The color on them varies from water condition, cods in clearer water has bright lime green and dark green hues to it. As for this bunch of cods, the yarra is a lil discolored with muddy water mostly caused by the carps..

*Sunny, correct me if im wrong on this species. As i know nuts about specifically identify this fishes..

cheers

Thanks mingmon86 for ur info..
Someday when I go to Australia, sure I will catch this fish..

Pens bro,

hehe…this sound hilarious..well this is Murray Cod and i dont think they use this kind of fish to make those cod liver oil that you see in SCOTT EMULSION…those are made from Atlantic Cod (refer to this webpage http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Cod)

While this Murray Cod, are too precious to be taken out from their waters and its a beautiful fish that hopefully will remain for the next few generation. The Department of Primary Industries in Vic are doing everything to keep this fish population by stocking them in selected river/dam. Lets hope it will remain there as long as it could.

Patogen bro,

You are most welcome, i might be wrong of what ive typed about this Murray Cod as this is my first time.

Yeah hopefully when you have a chance to fish the australian waters, lets hope it will remain mighty in our wild rivers/dam.
