For this there is no better place to learn than to visit the south of Thailand. They had shown enormous ingenuity to make do with whatever they have. Lawn movers, small generators (Kubota), and motorbike (kapcai) engines had been successfully used for small boats. There are also many successful installations of truck / lorry engines into bigger boats.
I had been on a beautifully Thai build cabin cruiser powered by a Izusu diesel engine. It had a well planned engine bay with good sound proofing and rubber mountings. It runs much like a petrol engine smoothness.

Yes i do agree with you ekwong. Our friend is far beyond us in tech. They are very creative and inovative, not only in motoring but agriculture.. etc..etc.. But the problem is..tau-tau je lah..need to cross border loo..(My inter. pasport expired last year). Anyhow do you come across anyplace near border that i can take a visit..
Actually i’ve tried googling…found a company offering the set kit for longshaft prop…
Tapi masalahnya
1)Not sure whether my engine is compatible with that set.
2)I ni jenis yang tak berapa gemar buat bayaran online..bukan tak caya..cuma hati-hati..
Syarikat to offer set tu dgn harga USD 90.00..consider acceptable la tu..susah kalau nak buat sendiri !!?
So buat masa ni i kena survey dan tunggu sapa-sapa yang nak bantu..TQVVM
Rantau Panjang/Golok border crossing allows for day trip if you leave your IC card at the Mlaysian Immigration point. However, you have to be back to collect your IC card before 6pm and you can’t go beyond Golok town.
Golok itself has many long-tailed boats. If you can visit some of the boat repairs shops you may learn a whole lot from them.

Kalau boleh wat camtu dah kira very very OK le tuu.. Enjin 6.5HP ditambah shaft dan kipas.
Enjin yang saya ada jenis yang galas tu. Saya fikir masalahnya cuma nak tukar mata mesin rumput tu dengan kipas je(bunyi senang je…)
Lepas tu tambah lengan aluminium panjang supaya tegap/ tak melengkong. Lepas tambah pemegang pendek dan fixkan kontrol minyak kat situ. Boleh jadi ke..?? [:I]
Rantau Panjang/ Golok..yeah..great idea. or maybe Pengkalan Kubor/ Ta’ba, around Tumpat.
There also got river..mungkin ada long-tailed boat workshop.
My KDN still has few relatives around that area(long time no see..). Maybe should make a surprise visit in nearest time (serampang dua mata..)
Let me make a gross calculation..[;)]
: My engine cost RM300++ bought few years ago..after susut nilai..maybe now cost RM100/=.
: Buy a propeller set at border around RM300..
: Minyak kereta, makan dll pergi balik Kelantan..RM200
: Upah ubahsuai..free..(buat sendiri..!!)
: Overall RM600/= can own an outboard motor..waahh..sound very promising to me..[8D]
one possible problem, after all is done, you may find that the ‘engine’ would be grossly underpowered. Seriously, you may be ended up with a less than ONE hp long-tailed outboard engine that would hardly move a canoe let alone a 50kg car-topper.
underpowered… emm..the possibility is there. In fact my lawn mower engine is a kind of small one. Need to visit and take a close look at real long-tailed engines..what type of engines, their HP etc. I,m afraid that things might go back to square..find an original outboard engine..!!?
the long-tailed engine was first done out of necessity and to perfected their ‘art’, the Thai had spent years on the ‘technology’. A visit and careful analysis of the real thing will shorten the learning curve.
I came across a video on long prop installation. Very simple (they were experts, of course..). this make me think twice..i think we also can do this, provided the correct materials are there. And the most important thing..they are cheaper…
