Coral Damage Cause By Anchor

I were chit-chatting with a friend of mine on last night Christmas eve. He pointed out this interesting topic which i thought could be discussed among seafishing anglers or divers who know of such incident.

As all of us know each time an anchor is drop straight down to the bottom of the sea, it will need to hook on to something to allow the fish to stick to one area.

So..what are the chances of it damaging the coral or any structure of the sea?

Anchors dropped on coral reefs do tremendous damage. Ironically, while the blame is often placed on fishermen and fishing boats, in marine park areas where fishing is banned, but recreational diving is still allowed, anchoring of dive boats can be a major problem for coral reefs. Typically, fixed mooring bouys are installed to allow boats to moor up to the buoy, so they don’t need to anchor.

Offshore, oil pipelines and other fixed installations on the seabed often suffer damage from anchors. Also nets are another cause of damage and many systems are designed either buried, or with net guards. The problem is that such structures are attractive to fish and therefore to fishermen.
