CR 010507 - First timer to Chenderoh Lake

Date: 1st May 2007
Weather: AM Light rain and overcast. PM Overcast
Target species: Toman and Subarau

We have never caught Toman or Subarau before and am looking forward for this trip for some time. We arrived at Chenderoh Lake Jetty at 7:30am after some wrong turns along the way. It was our first time on this lake.

We were greeted initially by a young looking fellow whom we found out shortly he is there just to shuttle us to the chalet resort area. The first boat that guide arrived with is too small and not the one that we asked for. So he had to go back to exchange it. It took us about 45 minutes total from the jetty to start real fishing.

We went for Toman first. The initial search for the first 2-3 hours is not successful as the water is muddy and the guide told us that that is not a productive sign. Nevertheless the guide did saw one Toman fry rises around mid-morning and on the first cast, Koay_Kao got this:

She is released after photo taking but the local guide kind of baffled by that.

The wind soon picked up and the guide suggested going for Subarau instead since it is more difficult to spot for Toman rises. There are plenty of Subarau boils around but there are little hook up. Probably we are not using the right lures or techniques. Here are a few we got. The guide had much better luck than us.

Around noon the guide need to pick up his children from school and put us at the chalet to wait for his return. We took the opportunity to have our lunch.

When the guide returned an hour and ten minutes later, we continue going after the Subarau but soon got bored by chasing the schools of fish around. So the later half of the afternoon we decided just to casting for Toman hear the edges of the lake.

We went to this nice tributary of Sungai Perak and here is where some interesting stories unfold. Not too long into the tributary while casting near some fallen trees, Koay Kao got this big bite. I still don’t understand till now what he was thinking but he went on ‘playing’ with the fish instead of pulling it out from the snaggy area. Needless to say, the Toman (most likely, And much bigger than the earlier one) manage to pull itself to some fallen branches and the line got snag. Lesson learnt. (I hope) Will never find out what really it was on the other side and if you do come across a 4-5 kilo Toman that has a fat rap on it. That’s the one.

Up till that time I still had not gotten a single bite yet. About 10 minutes before we call it a day, we notice some Subarau chasing some unguarded Toman fries. I caught my first and second Subarau for the first time ever.

Another interesting story is that just about we are to quit for the day, the guide lost his favorite lure because of a bad swivel snap. He strip NAKED and dove into the river to look for it.

Summary

Total fish bites - 1 Toman, 5 Subarau and 1 ‘If I Reel It In Fast And Hard Then I Wouldn’t Have Lost It’ fish.

Pretty nice place – Not too many trash, water appears to be clean.

Guide - We would have like the guide to be more professional. Every time when we chase after the Subarau boil just who is the first to cast? You guessed it. The guide beat us to it most of the time. Didn’t we PAY so that WE can fish? We don’t mind sharing the bounty but remember who the customer is.

Heavily fished area - Nets and line hooks are everywhere. However there are potentials of big lurkers around.

Our rating for this trip: 7.5 / 10.

We will be back for more investigation on this lake. I still have a Toman that I have to catch

<pic>

p.s. The guide didn’t find the lure and there are leech in the water…

Nice report with beautiful fishes bro, how much was the cost to charter the boat? I’ve never been to chenderoh before and i’m eager to do a trip there. Btw is the water level very high?

About $180 for the whole day (minus 1 hour break for the guide I think). I am not too sure if the water level is high or low since it is the first time there but by judging the water level at the dock, I’ll say we are 2-3 feet away from the height that the jetty can handle.

judging from the picture, that lure must have cost him a lot…kekeke

Good pictures.

About the BIG bite you got and lost, I kena like that from Chenderoh a few times. Trust me, you would never have been able to land the fish. It just isn’t physically possible.

An unsatisfying guide is a terrible thing. If you taruh him, he might get fed up and not be bothered to take you to hotspots. If you don’t taruh him, you pulak don’t get your money’s worth. sigh… one of those things with no solution.

He says it is a gift from a fishing guy who is also a writer. Forgot to mention earlier he got the lure stuck on a tree. About one and half story high. He climbed to get it too. [:D]

Could it be you?? [:)]

You jump I jump, You fish I fish, You catch I release.

Question: what lure was the toman caught on?

Fearless,

The Toman above was caught on a Rapala DT. The one that got away is on the Rapala ‘goldfish’.

ok. shad rap diver goldfish. tq. a very reliable lure.

Fearless,

I kena Chenderoh’s poison oledi. When you wanna arrange a trip there? [:p]

You jump I jump, You fish I fish, You catch I release.

Tai lou,

This is my current short term ambition.

  1. Buy a little Coleman rubber raft.

  2. Buy a humminbird wireless remote fish finder

  3. Buy a beautiful plano tackle box

If possible, I would like to achieve these three ambitions before I wanna go Chenderoh. All things going as smoothly as they are now, it should take me about two weeks.

The other challenge is that my lembu cannot take that kind of distance travel. Way overdue for an overhaul. So we gotta work out another vehicle.

And if possible, I plan to go without Aloon. PLEASE DON’T TELL HIM. He very siu hei one. Nothing against him, but he not good enough an angler.

I always have to take care of him and out of brotherly love, I always let him use my best lures and give him chance to cast first so that he can get fish. But his cast not accurate; some more it takes about two days from the time a toman rises to the time he cast to the rise. By that time, the fish swim to Bersia oredi. Remember, DON’T TELL THAT BOY.

Lordman bro,

Congrats for the good trip. We used the same guide/Pakcik that you mentioned. Would say we are pretty happy with his service so far and forumer TNChew can testify that. First of all, he is one hardworking crazy angler which is a must to be a guide. I have met so-called guide whom prefer to go into his slumberland rathar than changing spots when fishing was slow, played with your baitcaster and got birdnest, mat rempit speeding in the lake without much experience end up hitting the jetty and broken a rod etc etc. Secondly, that pakcik is one good joker too, you need to know him more to appreciate his sense of humour. Thirdly, he doesnt mind going all over the lake chasing after sebaraus. Since he is the one operating the boat, anglers will always be the first to land lures on school of boiling sebaraus. Dont think skipper can operate the boat and cast at the same time. Personally wouldnt mind skipper fishing as long as he does his work. May be one need to encounter not too happy experience to appreciate the good ones.

By the way the pakcik still mumbling about his lost lure the day after. He was planning for a second dive. That lure must be working miracle for him. Told him if I can find similar one in town will get for him in my next trip foc … hehehe

Lordman, when I read statements like this “She is released after photo taking but the local guide kind of baffled by that.” I would like to say to you good job, well done. Hope the guide understands the importance of eco-tourism to his rice bowl.

Regard,
Vincent

PopperCater,

You are absolutely right. On the second day after the trip I was thinking to myself, ‘what if he IS a better guide among others?’ Personally I wished I had tipped him a twenty. I am way too pampered by professional fishing guide overseas. [;)] It is a good start for local professional guide, but there is still much to be done. The next time I see him I will definitely make it up. I am actively searching for the lure he was using and will get one for him too.

Lordman,

Hehe, thanks for the post up and a good one. Have fun lotsa to go along with you during this trip. Hopefully there willl be another trip next month, this month PK d…Haha. Anyway until today the ONE that got aways still swims around my head, shall and will have my revenge. Not mentioning geting back my beloved lure.[:p]

Regarding the guide, could see his passion into fishing but for my opinion. He just gotta ensure the ‘customer’ fished before he does. Anyway i was more like a boatman during the trip, not to mention being yelled a few times to start the bloody engine. Well everyone got their own opinion so, it depends.

About that Chenderoh area, serious conservation has to start as the fishing pressure from the locals and meat hunters are at high levels. Could say around 70% of the area is planted with rawai. To highlight the matter, toman is the most sought after fish at that area due to its good price in the market. (to add on, if u ever tell a local u release back a toman, trust me, u’ll be CURSED!!!)

Overall a good fishing trip and experince learned (the ONE that got away) [;)]

“out cast, out spin, out fish”

Chenderoh Fans,

The lure that the boatman had used looks like the abu island or its imitation. It has a cured body and looks rather flat. It does not look like a minnow. This is what I have concluded after studying the picture showing him holding the lure with the Sebarau.

Did you guys catch any PB’s there at Chenderoh? heard that a few locals have netted some about a couple of years back.

fishingboy,

No. We didn’t get any Peacock Bass or heard about their existence in the lake.
