you can start squiding /rockfishing in our local islands like sibu, tinggi, and p.aur, p.berhala

Jettys make good squidding spots. u gotta get the right technique to trick the squid to wham your lure. otherwise beach fishing in Maldives is another alternative. look for flats in malaysia with some rocks beneath, i know lang tengah and langkawi got some potential

i also have own boat for freshwater fishing, never need to worry when i do last minute trips hehehe

kill the friggin’ netters

thanks very much for the squiding/rockfish tips, man will keep in mind wow, you really mean business when going for trophies *salute* golly, <5kg toman considered curut? [:0] fish getting scarce ... 5-7kg considered very good liao

Originally posted by knht Wow, I pair my Ryoga 1016 with Spiderwire 20 lbs, Alphas R with Tuffline 10 lbs. Have a spare Fireline 15 lbs in between. Leaders are YGK shock leader 20 lbs, 30 lbs and 40 lbs.

Looks my set up is only good for longkang puyu compared to yours. Somemore i always dare to use Alphas with 10 lbs to challenge PBs n Toman, really dunno how to spell “die”.

no la, knht, that's A D V E N T U R E when you hit big PB ... yeeeeehawww! [:D]

i started off with spiderwire 20lbs for all my reels
pioneer/xzoga 40lb shock for bottom fishing only
been wanting to try out lighter lines with comparative strength

have yet to give the lighter lines a proper workout
hope the next trip will present opportunities
if and when big fish does bite, then it’ll be my skill (or lack of it [B)]) in playing the fish, be it rod, line, knot, hook, drag

wanna try YGK/Varivas PE1 but can’t find any around my area

Here’s my 2cents.

leader serves the following purposes.
(1) To protect the line when fighting fish. Fish might get chance to bite on line, a thick, tough leader is difficult to bite through. (especially true for Pacu fish).
(2) For clear water fishing, mono translucent leaders is to minimize mainline visibility. Certain fish is easily spooked by colorful mainlines. (Red Tilapia).
(3) For seawater fishing, thick (50lbs >) mono or some prefer to use wire leaders to increase abrasion resistance. (especially true for Barracuda in rocky waters).
(4) There are even SHOCK leaders which are extra elastic which serves to improve solid hook-up. (Bait get pulled by fish then leader extend & retracts cause hook to go in deep).

My personal preference for leaders:
Haruan/Siakap/Toman - 2 feet 30lbs Mono Transparent Leader joint by FG knot on 20lbs braided line.
Tilapia/Lampam/Jelawat - 4 feet 20lbs Mono Transparent Leader joint by Albright knot (reinforced with rubber glue) on 12lbs mono line.
Pacu - 4 feet 50lbs Mono Transparent Leader joint by Albright knot (reinforced with rubber glue) on 12lbs mono line. (Don’t use wire leader, Pacu easily spooked by shinny objects).
Barracuda - 2 feet 80lbs Mono Transparent Leader join by FG knot on 15lbs braided line.

Off-course, one can still land fish w/o leaders, but chances is lower.

I live for the Hunt!

BTW,

Has anyone used Flurocarbon leaders? Heard is very clear in water, almost 100 invisible.

I understand why leaders are required but I’m not sure how to attach hooks/lures or even the sabiki rigs. Does the sabiki need to be the same gauge as the leader?
