sometime i was really wonder bout this issue bout the size of the reel and the length of the rod… any SIFU out their can share out their EXP on this topic…
bigger reel = more line and more drag… also heavier
longer rod = cast more far… but not east to travel
why would i ask this question coz to most of the time I spend the fishing time at paypond.. as you know pay pond has the limit size of pond… and you see how often in pay pond ur line can out to the max… is kind waste the line in spool need to be change for like every 4 month… but only used mayb 30% or 40% of total spool in line…
as for the rod.. too long only will only hit the ROOF when casting or hit the pass person during a hook up… the question does longer rod give a better STRIKE or FIGHT ??

Rod. 6 or 6 and a half foot rod. As long as can reach the centre of the pond and manage the weight of a float.
Thin rods very syiok when fighting fish but if cannot control can tangle with other people’s lines. Not everybody sporting enough to reel in when their neighbour is fighting a fish.
Also very shy if ‘LUCUT’ at last minute
Reel. For paypond small size ok liao. As for the issue with ‘but only used mayb 30% or 40% of total spool in line’ => what most people do is take the old line off onto a different spool, then re-spool it on back wards. That way the used part is down by the bottom and the newer part of the line is what you’ll cast out.

Why ? For normal payponds, a 1500 - 2000 series reel will have more than sufficient line as you only effectively need about 100 feet. As for me, I use 100 feet of 12 lb braid with the rest being cheap mono backing, and like " wetshoes " reverse my line when it is worn. You will need a bit more only if you go to places like Fish Valley where the ponds are much bigger.
Similarly, why do you need so much drag ? The normal 1 - 3 kg fish that they put in can be reasonably subdued by the same size reel if you set your drag at 1/3 and use your finger lightly on the spool in an emergency.

In theory, Yes - but my 51/2 - 6 foot rods are already able to cast to the middle of the pond, and they have the additional benefit of making it easier to net your fish if you are alone. A 6 footer is a good compromise, but I normally use 51/2 feet rods for payponds that I go to around KL … and No, I have not yet hit the roof, but have demolished a very nice Daiwa against a metal pole !
A longer rod exerts more pressure against your wrist compared to a shorter rod - the leverage works against you for the same pull.
Why do many people still use a 6 - 61/2 foot rod ? - wait until you go to a place like Fish Valley and try to hook up some Pla Buk like what TJS does ! My 51/2 foot will feel like a match stick then. [:D]

I guess it depends on which paypond you go to.
If a small pond, no need length. Big pond length of rod will cast further to reach middle
if the pond’s fellow angler is friendly, no need size. Can take own sweet time to reel in. But too long to reel in will also piss people off especially you accidentally entangle their lines
I have different sets of tackle for the few payponds I go to. 7ft + size 4000, 6ft + size 2500, and 5.5ft + size 2000. I find that contrary to women’s preference, the shorter and smaller the size, the more enjoyment I would get [:)]

since you’re a paypond kaki, i assume:
a) you’d know the layout more or less like the back of your hand [:D]
b) and by now, your trials and errors would have shown you which rod/reel combo serves you best at which spots [:I]
my 6.5’ rods do cast further
my 5.5-6’ rods come reasonably close with the right weight combo at the end of my line
but for all the reach, my rm40 4’ rod that casts out less than 10’ away (by choice) gets the most fish … from juveys (of all sorts) to 3.5kg pacus
since i’m a freshwater fella … i just use, trim when frayed, carry on
the thought of extra line is comforting, but we do not really need it
smaller reels may need a little help from our palms/fingers from time to time for added drag
there’s no denying shorter rods/multi-pc makes travel easier
i live with travel inconvenience when it comes to stowing them away given my personal pref for 1pc rods
given the concern with roofs, i’d go for a stiffer 5.5’ for reach and power, pair it with a 2500 baitrunner to compensate for the slow/medium/regular tip … jes’ my 2sen
they put at least 20lb on… mostly under 2000 size reels..
they never really ‘give’ to the fish..
just drag 'em in and loose if needed…if not others will get mad
and just won’t cooperate if you land a fish…
rods…gamers have at least 10-20lb rated
i can’t recommend you anything…
the best setup is always what you feel the best to use…
and if you really want to feel POWER of the fish..
use the lightest setup that you dare…
for instance 2-6lb rod 750 reels 4lb line…
huhu…and you’ll have a dying fish at about 4kgs upward
for dinner…
mind you i’m not gamers AND MOST OF MY FISHING

Hi Sifus, i wanted to start a discussion on this topic until i found this thread. Anyways, after making the transition to bc, i am leaning towards shorter rods of 5’ 8" to 6’ rods. I don’t see any difference in casting distance and the control of a shorter rod is better in my point of view.
Maybe you sifus can point out the long rod vs. short rod or vice versa pondering points. [:D]
yup u r right, short rods are easier to handle compared to long ones
however i never use anything below 6foot3 so everytime i handle anything shorter than that i feel like i’m missing something n don’t have the ‘rasa’ to fish anymore hehehehe

while the size and length does matter, most importantly must be able to last longer !!!..i mean, the tackle be it rod or reel must be durable and tahan lasak [:D]
bend more or less is depending on the modulus of the rod’s graphite or it’s material used. however u r right, with the same material used, put a 6foot rod and a 5 foot rod side by side the 5 foot would definitely feel stiffer

As for normal payponds where people give you nasty looks if you accidentally cast too near to them, my choice is for 51/2 to 6 feet. As for places like Fish Valley where you want to cast a mile - 61/2 to 7 feet.

i cast a rap popper better and further with a 6.5’ 1pc spiral wrapped EA 10-20lb than with a 6’ extra fast tipped, spiral wrapped 1pc PE1 custom
