quote:Originally posted by jackpot I believe I saw it before as well in one of the largest aquarium store in Penang. Will do a survey again to confirm.
Jackpot,
confirm saw it was there.. and some other aqurium shop also.. there is another imported fish that i saw that is the aligator gar..
Guys,
How about writing into the newspapers about your discoveries. Let Malaysians know how widespread this invasion is.
Lets all do something about it instead of just informing each other over a forum. Your action would then show how inefficient the authorities are despite their reply to my previous letter that there are strict guidelines on importation of alien species!
After that, we shall suggest that the Federal Govt present a broom to the Director of Fisheries for his inefficiencies!
Found another shop at Taman Khosas, “Kosas Aquarium” selling these pikes. I spoke to the shopkeeper about it and its dangers, conversation went like:
me: ini ikan dari mana? Shopkeeper: Mungkin dari australia atau canada.
me: u bawak masuk tak pakai permit ka dan mau simpan ada pakai permit ka? Shopkeeper: takde permit punya, simpan pun tak payah permit. jangan risau la kalau mau simpan.
me: Ini ikan makan apa? (just asking a stupid question here to prove my point) Shopkeeper: Dia makan anak ikan, jaga dia macam toman la. (Then at that moment the shopkeeper scooped up a handful of baby carps and put it into the tank and whoosh the pikes at them all in less than a few seconds.)
me: Mau jaga dia air semua ade special ka? suhu etc…? Shopkeeper: Takde le, u simpan macam ikan toman atau haruan.
me: boss ini ikan bahaya tau kalau lepas masuk kita punya tasik atau sungai ikan lain sumua susah. Shopkeeper: ya saya tau…
Then i started giving him a little etchics talk about alien fishes, but he doesnt seem to care at all and ended the conversation by attending to another customer…[:(!]
I’m really fed up with these people…the best part that shopkeeper is also another fisho and sells fishing stuff and bait at his shop, really a big disappointment.
I read the latest “Rod and Line” there was a fine articles about pike dangers as well and it seems there are a handful of people out there who show these concerns, i just hope we can somehow stop this mistake in the making.
p/s: i also found that this shops sells baby alligator gar fish (RM 125)and arampaima (RM ?)in its tanks!
Hi guys…scary huh? Looks like fish spread has gone global! But that has been happening for quite sometime i am not surprised at all. What have we got…flower horn, peacock bass, pacu(piranha cousin), rohu?,Tilapia, etc. While their population grew and spread i am not 100% sure that the demise of some local species totally attributed to them. I think nature will eventually find an equillibrium.

The one i fear the most is Homo Sapien!
No, positively NOT! It is coupled with habitat destruction through pollution, logging, mining (especially gold where mercury is used) etc.
There is also over fishing and harvesting for profit (like the Kelah, Emparau, Arowana, etc).
The government’s lack of foresight and inactivity in protecting our natural resources e.g. lack of regulations and enforcement, restocking program, fishing seasons, etc. The list goes on!
What we are doing or trying very hard to do; is to reduce the pressure that is already on the local species. They are already struggling to survive as it is. With the introduction of these exotic [:(!]destructive species, their survivability is further reduced!
I usually don’t come to this section but today I accidently click on this section and found a topic of prediator fish. At first I thought someone have discovered a new spices but after reading the forum conversation then I know you guys are talking about Northern Pike. Frendly speaking, 4 Northern Pike have been released in Tasik Prima last month by my big boss who moving house from Puchong to sierranmas. The size of the Northern Pike ranging from 5 to 10K. Initially I was not aware of the danger of this fish until I read in this forum topic.

Bro,
Give us your boss’s name and we shall accord him the same “accolades” that we bestowed upon the “father of Peacock bass” in Malaysia![}:)]</font id=“size2”>
Hi guys, i do follow this thread and understand about protecting our waters from alien species. I grew up in Subang Jaya and fish in the Subang lake since the 80’s. Its totally changed now, and not just the fish species because of the intro of PB.
We used to easily scoop up shrimps and seluang enough for 10 of us fishing the whole day. Now you can only see a few at night with a torchlight in shallow water when you use hong to attract them. PB got them all.
Also do we actually know “The father of PB in Malaysia”?? If he does exist he sure messed up my playground.
Any body buying them will end up letting them loose into our lakes and rivers because of the very high maintainence of feeding them. Everyday RM5 of seluang. It will be like the stoopid flowerhorn craze. You will also see those stoopid people using their nets and scooping all the shrimp, ketutu, Guppies and other tiny fishes along our lakes and rivers to reduce the cost to maintain their fish.
Somebody give this Ronnie(father of PB) a call. Now can become father of pike. Real idiot this fella, messing around with nature. Best part is, he thinks he is right and is proud of it.
A Fisheries Officer has contacted me, inteneding to discuss on the Pike and other alien predators. Great to know that they are now concerend with this issue. Lets see…
