Epoxy Glass Minnow - Sort Of

Guys - maybe this would be better covered in the fly fishing thread. But since (use of) epoxy is widely covered here, hope you guys don’t mind.

I hoped to make an epoxy glass minnow and I do hope the end result looks somewhat similar to those portrayed at this site: http://www.burfish.com/catalog/7477.html

  1. Can I make one without a rotator-dryer machine??

In my ignorance it seems reasonable for me to place it on a flat surface and sculpts the minnow.

  1. If yes (can be done on a surface) - what do I need to ensure it does not stick to that surface? Talcum powder sprinkled on a sheet of glass before pouring in the epoxy? Baby-oil?

  2. Sculpting - what will be a good tool to sculpt the minnow? Meaning I can reuse the tool back. Or I should just use a disposable toothpick??

  3. Let’s say I intend to “glitter” the glass minnow. Dark glitters for topside and silver for bottom. That means I will use 2 sets of epoxy. How can I ensure the glitters do not run over the other side? Apply separately and then wait for it to dry? If yes, wouldn’t this also result in a weak “joint”?

  4. Let’s say the question I should’ve asked is – any sites on the web for the how-tos on epoxy glass minnow? Searched around (but not hard enough I guess) and only commercial sites. The other sites do not cover epoxy glass minnows.

Help needed for the next stage of my journey in piscatorial pursuits.

CW

CW,

base on my understanding on the epoxy (knowledge transfer from my gurus: FT & lapala [:D])…

  1. Rotator-dryer helps you to get an even thickness of surface, actually you can manually do this using your hand. Use forcept or plier to hold your lure and rotate it using your hand, about 5~6 round / min. after about 5 minutes, the epoxy will start harden and you can hang it any where.

  2. Not a good idea to put powder or what so ever on epoxy which is not 100% dried, as the powder may stick on the epoxy and will be hard to be removed afterwards.

  3. Use a metal sculptor. epoxy doesn’t so call “eat” into metal and can be removed easily after it dried out.

  4. Apply the top side 1st, then after about 10 minutes, do the bottom side. By doing this, both parts will be “joined” together stronger. This is how I make the epoxy eye.

  5. Errr… maybe can search for some fly tying sites??

This is based on my understanding, other guy may have their own method [:D]. hope this helps you

I come, I see, I fish!

For consistant results, u’d need to make a mold then pour epoxy in to make those. RTV mold is okay to do that, epoxy don’t stick to RTV. If u’re not making many try just those aquarium silicon for mold but it takes longer to cure properly & don’t last as long plus a few shrinkage issues. Check in tackleunderground for mold making tutorials. For the 2 colors, it looks like a 2 piece mold affair.

Thanks guy. Would not say am on the way yet, but the journey of a thousand glass minnows begins with a few clicks and a member registration in tackleunderground.

Those guys really make things sound simple.

Thanks.

RTV tu apa?

becks,

RTV is some sort of silicon material.

Thanks RR - where did you source the 7 RPM motor from?

Asked around toy shops - they only have those with 20,000 RPM motors for the race cars. Ha! Ha!

They did suggest I visit the TV Repair shops to modify from the turntable; only heard of those “Stars on 45” records so am I wrong in guessing the turntables are 45 RPMs?

CW

CW,
Actually, George got it for me. Fat Rap advocates using the turntable motors of microwave ovens that have gone kaput. Check with your local electricial repair shops.
Another source is Jalan Pasar electrical supply shops! However, these are brand new motors!

the use of motors are great help, especially when u are epoxying many at a time. however if u make one in a long while like myself, just use ur hands to turn for at least 10mins after u applied the epoxy( i’m assuming the time u took from mixing the epoxy till u apply it on is 10 mins). by the time it would’ve stabilized and u can just peg it somewhere to dry.

FT - if you have seen my self-tied flies - you will understand that I cannot focus for more than 5-minutes. Which is why I find the RTW mold a great idea.

Anyway - another flash in the pan - on the basis that nothing sticks to teflon, theoretically I carve a wooden mold, spray teflon on and then apply epoxy, right?
