fish-finder rig

Hi morning everybody, im a newbie here…just registered this morning…but have been surfing to this forum for quite sometime,…emm, ive seen some pictures of fish-finder rig and noticed they differ to one another…here, ive some questions about the rig and hope u guys may advice…1) where should the sinker slide? is it on the shock leader? or should we affix another leader to the shock leader by using a swivel, and let the sinker slide on the affixed strand?..2) what is the best type of sinker to be used for this particular rig?..3) is it appropriate to use a bait clip on the fish finder rig, if yes, where should I attach it?.

Thanks so much.

zam… first of all welcome to the forum.

if i may…in surfcasting more often than not the surfanglers or myself in particular will generally not use a fish finder rig as it would only limit casting distance. The one rig that i may think would have any resemblace to the fish finder rig would probably be the pulley rig. it is quite complicated to describe the rig here as well as to make one. Like the fish finder rig in pulley rig when the fish takes the bait it will not feel the weight of the sinker until the whole rig has slid down to the sinker. This gives the fish more time to take the baited hook properly before the whole setup sets the hook automatically for you. All you have to do is give a nice gently tug to make sure the hook is set properly and then bring the fish in.

below is one illustration that i hope wud be useful for you.

Beside knowning on rigging & baiting Surf angler must master casting technique.

Q1. Most of us used fix sinker using clips or Snap-Swivel. My opinion you can used both sliding on the Shockleader or Rig Body.
Q2. You can use any type of sinker for any type of rigs in general. An aerodynamic shape sinker is best for surf fishing and also grip type should you fish in strong under current area.
Q3. Bait clip is to hold the bait together to the rig body thus when apply power casting the bait won’t be flying around.

Hope this help.

Hi Zam,

Welcome again, if I may add…the principle of the fish-finder rig is to have the baited hook free from the sinker. Why is this so? well it is to allow the bait to be free to drift to look for fish so to speak thereby calling it the fish-finder rig…he he, seriously.

This rig is actually more suitable for strong under-current condition, which means you would need a sinker which is not easily moved, best would be the grip sinkers.

Preference again, I don’t quite like this type of rig because it does not allow effective self hooking of the fish which can be very critical in surf fishing especially for the table size fish. Paternoster type rigs are still best for me.

hi…

hope this can help…

rapalajoe,

Yeap, thanks joe…all the above are paternoster rigs in several variations, except for the pulley rig (extreme left).

My favourite are the one-up one-down rig (no clips) and the one-down clip-up rig.

bro aznaf,

actually i ve come across a lot of surf rigs from the mag here in ire and on the net,i just wondering why most angler in m’sia not using such rig .for me the bait clips is vital to overcome the ‘helicopter’ effect specially when power cast is apply to cast far.i also wonder izzit possible to get the gadjet and terminal tackle that is required to buid the rig such as srt spring, gemini clips, bead etc back home in malaysia.

Hi,

Actually many of us ( I’m speaking on behalf of the My Surfcasting Club ) are already using the rigs above for many years.

We obtained these items mostly from Singapore and even brought in some of the items including the rods from England (thanks to Onn).

Fortunately, of late items like the bait clips, impact shields, UK rods, tripods, coasters etc which were rare are now available in selected tackle shops in Malaysia but they are quite expensive.

I guess that’s why not many surf anglers fancy using them, imagine a cracked-off would cost about RM3 to RM5 worth of rigs..he he.

Do you surf fish a lot there and how’s the scene?

MSC

Aji’s,

Beside the high cost, I would say it is also due to lack of exposure on the accessories and it know how in applying to their fishing.

Some surf anglers in KT are using things like grip sinker, impact shield , clips both from Breakaway and Gemini on their rigs. Rigs like one clip up using Gemini Rig Clip is now commonly over there in Terengganu Kite.

You are welcome Aji Aznaff.

i dont surf fish a lot and as frequent as u guys back in messia.summore now its winter here.i found out that not many ppl here do surf fishing compare to the other parts of ire specially the west coast.i think its even better in other parts of uk.even not many fishing mag ere write bout ire other then mag bout fly fishing and pike fishing.

just got my surf rod recently, jenuh interviewing bro onn on the thread asking opinion bout century and zzippy, but end up buying greys…hampeh.thought of buying century tripple C LD before that.

bro onn, where can get all the gemini and breakaway rigs stuff back in messia?just in case…i am more interested on breakaway imp clips and gemini alpha bait clip.impact shield look bulky and funny la on my rig.

Joe,

You can buy the Breakaway clip from Sabre Tackle, KL. As for Gemini products have to import in from UK.

As for the rod, you should go for Century C3LD, Slim Butt, easy to load and good bite detection, recieved mine 2 weeks ago.

thanks bros for the advice…it helps a lot

Rapalajoe,

Check out http://www.sea-angling-ireland.org/bulletin%20board/ if you haven’t already!

They are a good bunch of guys and willing to help. There is some fantastic fishing in Ireland (Eire), and the West coast is the best. South West even better. I know the winters are cold & windy, but if you wrap up warm with decent clothing, you’ll be OK. Now is the Cod season! I miss catching cod!

Good Luck,

Ian

idpearl…
thanx a lot for the link…actually i am in dublin,i wish i am in galway or some where in the west coast…

I was working just outside Dublin, so know the area well. If you have a car, you could go over to Howth on the North side, Balscadden, The Bailey Lighthouse, Malahide or around that area. If you’re on the South side, you can go to Dun Loaghaire, or travel down to Greystones or the Wicklow beaches. There are some reports of cod there now, so you may be lucky. If you fish any of the beaches at night, you should get whiting or coalfish (coalies). Check out the chinese supermarkets for squid - 6 Euro for 2KG!

That forum has loads of information - you can spend hours on it!

Feb/March are usually the quiet months though, so be warned. You can get the bait, get fishing and get nothing but cold!
