Fishing in China

Some of you may already know that I am organizing a fishing trip to Ningbo, China from Sept 16~19. The trip is basically a get together with other fly fisherman from various parts of China and Taiwan. There will be avid lure fishing enthusiasts participating as well so bring along your spin gear if you like.

Fishing with artificial lures has taken off in China in a big way the last 2 years. Fly fishing is certainly gaining popularity rapidly as well. Being a very new activity in China, there are not many people who can guide a newcomer on his way to mastering the basics, or how to select equipment, and etc in fly fishing. China’s strict censorship(no You Tube) does not help either so there is a dearth of knowledge on the subject matter.

The trip will essentially be a fishing come cultural exchange, and hopefully we can provide a few pointers as well. It’s also a way for us to make friends and get to discover new fishing spots. There are some really wild, huge and hard fighting fish over there if you know where to look.

So far myself, Doc Ling, and Tee have confirmed and booked our plane tickets. Anyone else who is interested is most welcome to join in.
For this trip we have to pay our own plane ticket, transport, and lodging.

Essentially, it is appoximatelt RM1,360 for return ticket to Ningbo at the moment(via Airasia) and another RM350 to cover 3 days of lodging(twin share) and transport. The hosts are throwing in 3 days of fishing at their private reservoir. This includes meals and drink on the premises and free use of their Bass Boats. You can expect to catch Largemouth, Skygazer, Mandarin Perch, Sunfish(crappie), freshwater Seabass, Catfish, Northern Snakehead, and etc.

The itinerary is
KL>HANGZHOU Sept 16 17:20~22:20
HANGSHOU>KL Sept 19 23:20~04:30(next morning)

Please let me know soon as possible if you are interested.

The green one would be Largemouth Bass, and the silver one is a Skygazer, also known as Chinese/Korean Tarpon. All fish in the photos were caught on artificial flies/lures. These are the exact same bass boats that will be provided to us for fishing.

Hi Hans! You will be pleasantly surprised with the many fish we have in Asia although fishing for them with the fly may be quite challenging, haha!
Did you know that, un-beknownst to most outside or even inside the Middle Kingdom, there are some lovely trout streams with beautiful native lenok trout?

Largemouth Bass, Skygazers, and Mandarin Perch are biting well and good catches have been reported lately.

We shall be checking into the Ningbo Century Shengye Hotel from Sept 16~18 in the heart of Ningbo City and its many attractions, and commute to this private lake daily.

oh china also polluted by LMB ah…

the big silver fish looks awesome!

Novice angler here, any constructive advices greatly appreciated. Thank you

Never fish for LMB before. Anyone got any idea what fly to use apart from those standard popper-woolly-clouser thingy? [:D]

Hi Tan,

China waterways mostly polluted with rubbish, not LMB, haha.
In China you really need to know the places to fish or you are just wasting your time.
The place we are going to is a reservoir leased out to a private party that only allows recreational fishing on weekends. It is stocked with good sized LMB as well as native fish like Skygazer, Mandarin Perch, and Mongolian Redfin. September is a good time for LMB especially the onset of Fall when the weather starts to cool.
