Fishing Luconia (Off Miri)

Back from week-long trip to Miri, well, the fishing time
only 2.5 days really as the voyage there, just the boat
trip alone is 12 hours, not counting the drive down to
KL and the flight the Miri.

Total catch, about 700kg:

Will post up more pictures later, as rather busy after
week long leave.

Pete, nice catch…seems like fish is still abundant there…lots of variety species…oh boat journet took so long n not mentioning the trip down to miri…

Do get some rest after the long week…

Thanks for the picture posted…

Amberjack on jig:

Mind you the jigs are 400gm, it was’nt long before our elbow grease
starts to coagulate and we switch to “bangla”

First Ruby at Luconia, well baby Ruby really, if compare to the specimen
we get at Burma Banks. Largest of the trip also hardly nudging 4kg, while
at Burma Banks, the smallest is 4kg (largest 18kg).

My first Kanpachi on first night, and a big one at that, weighing in at 16kg. Yummy Sashimi fish. Caught on live squid.
On second night got another specimen that is runner-up in the jackpot at 16.5kg,
although it is shorter than the first (but rounder and fuller at the girth).

Chris with another hefty Amberjack caught in day time, it took a slice
tongkol when Chris started retrieving it. Amberjack looks like prefer
lively bait, thus metal jigs are effective.

Oh, and btw, that is a size 8 VMC hook on the Kanpachi.
Really cheap and good hook, around RM20 for a box of 100pcs.
No need fancy laser sharpen, high carbon, circle this, circle that kind of hooks that catch more fisho than fish.

Largest grouper of the trip by the organiser, around 8~9kg.

Went into the pot for everyone to taste as farewell dinner.
But frankly, a bit disappointed, the skin a bit on the tough side.
The Black Grouper from Burma Bank is much-much better, with fatty
flesh that rivals Cod.

The jackpot fish, a Manta Ray weighing in at 31kg.
Again caught on a size 8 VMC hook (equivalent to 3/0 hook)
So, small hook also can land big fish

From the fight, I postulate that the monster fish at Choko Maru wreck, Penang
is another Giant Manta Ray, as it is speeding sideway. At least this one
can be landed even though it went to 200m (from original depth of 120m) before
I’m able to gain some line and turn the battle around.

Wowwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwwww really syiok lo…mmmmmmmmmmmmmmm how nice if Penang has this kinda sizeble fish heheheh .

Congrats Pete…

Pete, fishes this size i think bangla needs to be X6 above…is really a nice feeling hooking up fish this size.

If u have time do confirm with me our end of July trip seating ok…

One thing great about fishing Luconia is the variety of species that we
don’t see elsewhere, here are some sampling, some with known common names,
some don’t even know what to call it. Please help to name them if you know:

Some kindof Seabream ?

No idea what species, but tekong swears that this is rare excellent eating

This one called Hai Ti Ji, or literally deep-sea chicken. Also called the Ketumbar in local speak.
Looks like somekind of snapper. Miri folks like it very much and goes
as much as RM30 per kg (compared to RM15 per kg for the Lo Shi Pan - Barramundi Cod) there.

This is the Durian season after all. This species is called that for obvious
reason that its scales are particularly pointy, every party of its body designed
to give you a spike.

This one called “Ajinomoto”

One kind of grouper, grey in colour throughout with some small black dots

Desert-Storm grouper

Another unnamed species

More grouper species

More unnamed species

Pete,

Nice catch! no wonder I can’t get hold with you last week as I was in Penang at that time.

A.H.

good catch, but I guess the freight cost gonna cost a bomb if you bring it back?
how much cost per head in total?

MAS Cargo RM2+ per kg
Freezing+packing RM2+ per kg
Forwarder sending in/out RM1++

Total about RM6+ per kg :frowning:

Boat trip cost RM1500 per head (11 pax), inclusive of 2 night hotel
stay + breakfast + a welcome and farewell dinner.

Flight to Miri on your own.

Charter cost for 4D3N is RM10,000 for this distant most part of Luconia,
but fishing time really around 2.5 days, as travelling there already 12 hours one way.

foo bro,

Benefit of staying long with one company (more than 10 years), I got lots of leave !

Used to do 3 trips a month, but nowadays due to dwindling catch, scaled down
to once a month, and a long-distance trip every half year.
