I notice that fishing in Sabah onboard Fongyuan Fishing boat, all the bottom angler’s don use spreader like most of us do over here [:0].
Wont the leader line get entangle the mainline when we drop weight?
Any sifu’s has the answer??

Let me make it clear for the above question…
Ater the mainline is the leader with a single patternosta rig then theres the weight…they tie another leader to the weight…
Normally for us over here after the mainline we have our spreader n at the end of the spreader we usually have our leader with hooks rite?
Foo,
As far as I concern, the best way to make paternoster rig (a.k.a. flapper rig) is by using 100% fluorocarbon leader. Only use dropper loop knot & double uni knot will do. What do you mean by spreader here?

Trubox brudder this is the spreader which i ment…
foo,
I understand now what you mean by spreader. As I said, there is another way to do the flapper rig with only using shock leader. Simple, effective & reasonably strong. But this method requires longer leader than usual.[:D]

foo,
You want me to explain how to do the simple flapper rig?[:D]
Mr.Barracuda…PLEASE DO NOT TAX MY FISH
Yes please do [:D][:p]
Well foo,
I am still new in this forum. I need to attach pictures so that it’s easier for you to understand. How to attach it then? Must have photobucket account ah?[^]
Mr.Barracuda…PLEASE DO NOT TAX MY FISH
Ya i also use photobucket to load photo here… what u do is copy the IMG Code and paste it here…
Foo,
I use ordinary mono line just for demo as below. I recommend 60lb (or greater) 100% fluorocarbon shock leader to make this rig. You will see later why.
So here we go:-
STEP 1</font id=“size6”>
Create the first NON SLIP MONO LOOP to be attached at your clip of your main line.

STEP 2</font id=“size6”>
Make the DROPPER LOOP #1 approximately 2 feet away from the first NON SLIP MONO LOOP.
The length of your dropper loop must at least 18inches.

STEP 3</font id=“size6”>
Take both legs of your dropper loop “agak-agak” 2 inches from its knot…
and create 2 turns of UNI KNOT on it…then…

Tighten it up…!!!

STEP 4</font id=“size6”>
Spread both legs of the remaining of your dropper loop…

Cut one of its leg…as close as possible to the UNI KNOT…

Then..walllaah…there you go your first hook rig
(don’t worry about the spiral line…this won’t happened to 60lbs 100% fluorocarbon shock leader)

STEP 5</font id=“size6”>
Make the DROPPER LOOP #2 at least 2 feet away from DROPPER LOOP #1.
Just repeat STEP 2, 3 & 4…and your second hook rig is ready loh.

STEP 6</font id=“size6”>
The final step. Create the second NON SLIP MONO LOOP 3 feet away from DROPPER LOOP #2…make sure this final loop is large enough to be fitted with the largest (not the heaviest) sinker you have…

Easy…when the non slip mono loop done…run it through the sinker’s wire…just like this…[:D]

And then… do like this…[:D][:D]

Finish the process & done. You can replace with lighter/heavier
sinker just like that…[:D][:D][:D]

THE RESULT…!!!</font id=“size6”>
Kaboooooooommmmm…!!! 7 feet (or so[:D]) Flapper Rig…no fancy accessories…no nothing…just the shock leader itself…!!! It is simple & easy to make…!!![:D][:D][:D]

P/S
Cheers…!!![^][^][^]

Trubox thanks for taking the trouble to show me…appreaciated it but why do we have to tie UNI KNOT at picture 3?

Foo,
IMHO the UNI KNOT is to avoid the line of your hook rig does not tangled with the main rig line. It’s something like to make it “keras” you know? Extra strength. You may need to sacrifice a few meters of your shock leader before you can make a neat & good flapper rig using this method[;)]
60lbs 100% fluorocarbon shock leader is hard enough though…but you need to consider the weight of the live bait you put at the hook, the current of the water against the line and most important of all, the moment you cast this flapper rig to the sea. Try to cast this rig at different distance to see the result. Otherwise, just drop it off to the bottom.[:D]
By the way, no problem & you are welcome.

foo,
This paternoster rig or apollo rig is suitable for certain locations, where the
fishes are mainly karang fishes, like East Malaysia, Burma Bank.
In Burma Bank, we size it up, 200lb main, with 150lb branches, as you may be landing
18kg Rubies.
However, for the Penang Ang Choh, this rig would not be effective and may even turn
off the picky eater. For best result with Ang Choh, you need to use the spreader
rig with 3 “siam” of leader.
My last trip to Luconia Shoal, tried using the Burma Bank paternoster rig, but rather
poor result, although one guy on a smaller paternoster rig was pulling in “durian” fish
one after another.
Switching back to spreader rig got our hit rate back up.
However, using a spreader rig at Burma Bank would be suicidal, as the bottom there are
full of karang and you get stuck in no time. Try breaking off a 200lb leader…ha..ha..
Bottom line, you have to use the rig that is suitable to the locality.

Thanks and noted on ur advise Pete…ya karang is ok to use paternosta rig where as not suitable to use it at KUMA…

If you are fishing at Kuching sea, and you are after ang choh, ang kei or kerapu, it shouldn’t be a problem using paternoster rig with 60lbs 100% fc leader because mostly the depth are just between 30m - 40m. The fish also not too brutal & not too big (average between 3kg to 6kg). It will be a big bonus if you can hook up a 8kg snapper/kerapu here.
Yeap, in Kuching this rig is mainly used to hook fish that move in group like red snapper jenahak & “umpak”.

trubox,
Kuching there got so much fish, the fish there like never see hook
and line before… taruh makan… taruh makan…

also the current there is consider very slow being an open South China Sea,
unlike the Malacca Straits which is like a funnel, and the depth that we
fishes in Kuching is like 40m mostly. You can actually use a light reel,
like Abu Garcia reels to fish at Kuching spot, enough liao.
Another thing is fishing there, the boat never park during day time, just
moving from one spot to another, so you drop your rig when the tekong
honk one time, then just let the line out and float away with the boat,
the longer you soak the bait the better. When everyone’s rig already up,
then only you retrieve your rig, and you will likely get a full house.
One kaki that went on our trip there, not only rig a paternoster, but
continue at the bottom with a spreader rig, with further apollo rig
on the spreader branch. So, effectively he got like 6 hooks in the
water and most of the time he get multiple hookups by soaking the
bait the longest there.
So, it is very different kind of fishing, you guys have it good there
with abundant fish with less fishing pressure.
Here in Penang, the fishes that remains obviously are the “smarter”
or “sensitive” one, otherwise, they already long gone …ha..ha..
