FISHING WITH LIVE SHRIMPS

On those occasions where you plan to fish with live shrimp, but have no live bait container, an ice chest will work quite well – and you don’t even need water!

Fill the chest half full of crushed ice. Soak several layers of newspaper in saltwater. (The bait shop should let you wet the papers.) Place the paper on top of the ice. Place your live shrimp on top of the paper without any water. Be sure to keep any ice from actually reaching the shrimp. Keep the container closed and open it only when getting bait. The cold sends to shrimp into a type of suspended animation. Once you hook the shrimp and place it in the water, it comes alive, kicking and swimming. Shrimp can be kept like this for as long as eight or nine hours, as long as no ice or cold water from the melted ice touches them!

This is a very useful infomation, btw can we use dried ice for this meathods ?

I really don’t think so for two reasons:-

  1. Dry ice is much colder than normal ice
  2. Dry ice release CO2 in bulk, meaning it will push out remaining oxygen supply very quickly. Even though the shrimps are in semi-hibernation mode, they still need a small qty of oxygen to stay alive.

But that’s just theory. If anyone have actually experienced using dry ice, feel free to correct me. [:)]

I can confirm that this method works really well. Brought a lot of live prawns this way from KL to Mersing some time back and the prawns stayed alive even late the second day. The key as you say is to not get them in direct contact with water and ice.

Dry ice does NOT work the same way for exactly the reasons stated. Unless you want them frozen for Maggi..

Good Fishing and Good Food Bring Good People Together

I can imagine if the fishmonger wants to play this trick to the aunties, he sends all the live shrimps into suspended animation and when the aunties bring the shrimps back home to wash, it kicks alive; it must be jolly funny to see them yelp!!!

Good tip! Can’t wait to try this on the maid or missus.

Oh yes, that would be hilarious, but it has to be in seawater. The udang pasir will be more durable to survive in cool moist condition with seawater, not with chlorinated water.

Doesn't work with tigers though. Have tried. They drop dead real quick once out of the water.
