I need some advise on fly selection for Trevally. I will be targetting GT, Big eye Trevally,
& blue Trevally in Tukun Perak end of the year. What would be a proper fly selection for these fishes. I understand that through ‘popping’ using top water popper (red) would work best. How about flies? Thanks and appreciate any relavant advise!
I will be fishing over deeper water. Above wreck and near to Tukun Perak. Are you familiar with these area? Any good recommendation for flies for trevally? Thanks… Appreciate it.

I am not familiar with this area. Will you be fishing the flats or over deeper water?
Bro CJ, GTs can be in the >10kgs mark, so besides the colour size does matter too(hahaha).
From what I heard the GTs are pretty used to popper kakis going after them, so reach and accuracy are also factors to hit these smokers. If no recommendations then go by the norm of red&white colours.
I will be bringing my fly gear besides bottom gear, out to Kuma in late Sept.
Good luck will be interested in the results there. </font id=“green”>

I would tend to agree with NexBigKatch. Red head and white body poppers. Red and white seaducers as streamers. Make sure to bring a heavy sinking line too, just in case, along with your floating lines. White and chartruese Decievers should also be in you box along with white and blue decievers. I would suggest streamers no less than 6 inches long. Make sure you have a big rod to handle thse brutes! At least a ten weight rod if not more! I googled “flies for giant trevally” and there is bunch of info out there.
These are extreme flies? therefore I would make my own - part of the fun.
I have seen flyers going after pikes and landing 20pounders with 8inch long flies, home made from the insulation foils shredded, but its a pig to cast in windy situations.
Here is my attempt - its a 5inch using size 3/0 long shank hook. I found this pink sack on the shoreline which looked colourful, so I stripped it for red “feathers” eyes to go on it and maybe some more real white feathers. As it is, it will float so will need to weigh it down with some soldering or copper wire.
Next fly, will try with the insulating foil.
Chris, any tips as to improve upon ? cheers.</font id=“green”>

I am surprise you mentioned ‘pike’. It is a cold water species commonly found in North America and certain parts of Eurpoe. Do you fish for them often? Are you in Malaysia?
I will try tying my own flies using the advise you gave. Thanks! Its going to be messy as I just started fly fishing not long ago. The beginners course was a blast! Thanks again!

First of all - unfortunately I am in the process of moving and won’t have access to my tying materials until at least the 8th of September… so I really can’t tie any examples right now…
Chuanjiek - Indeed - I have found that there are several flies that work for big predatory fish pretty much everywhere in both fresh and salt. North and south. For example, the seaducer (http://www.flyanglersonline.com/flytying/fotw/12497fotw.html) is one of them. I have caught pike, shark, queenfish, and so on with this fly in varying sizes. However about 6 inches works best (BTW, I am currently in Michigan, USA. Used to live in S’pore as an expat.) Anything by Enrico Puglisi (http://www.epflies.com/flyrecipes.html)
This link might also give you a few ideas… see the read and white popper oon the first page? That should work for trevally. So too with many of the streamers posted on the three pages:
Holly Molly! I didn’t read your previous posting. You are from Michigan? I was in Mansfield Ohio before. I fished a lot in Lake Erie and many parts of Ohio before.
Currently I am in Boston MA. I fishes the ocean more often now. Mainly cod, haddock, pollock, this weekend I will be fly fishing for false albacore.
I will be fishing in PG end of the year. Keep in touch we may fish around the states of of these days!
