Dun buy yet la…come and learn the basics first then decide.
I’m sure we will be able to share equipment during the clinic.
Those of you who have Xtra equipment that you are willing to share…please bring them along for the clinic? Tq</font id=“red”>

Wah… errr, so wide difference! Any good fly rods and reels to recommend for beginner?

Sibehsong, I agree with Lanun, just come for the clinic and you can check out for yourself all the different types of reels and rods.
Bear in mind that you will have to eventually buy a Vise, tools etc and tying materials e.g. bulu ayam etc if you want to progress.
Of course RM400-RM500 is enough. As a rule of thumb and this is what Pak Amin always advocates : “Spend as much as you can afford” Nothing more and nothing less.
Here’s what you can buy for the budget you proposed :
Option 1
Legacy Rod/Reel/Line Combo : RM180
Simple Vise : RM80
Bobbin Holder : RM20
Fly Tying Thread : RM10
Craft Fur X 2: RM24
Some Hooks and Bead Chain Eyes : RM20
Total = RM334 (estimate)
Option 2
Ross Worldwide Rod/Reel/Line Combo : RM450
Simple Vise : RM80
Bobbin Holder : RM20
Fly Tying Thread : RM10
Craft Fur X 2 : RM24
Some Hooks and Bead Chain Eyes : RM20
Total : RM604 (Estimate)
Option 3
Redington Crosswater Rod : RM350 (I think)
Reasonable priced reel : RM150 (got a few to choose from at this price)
Scientific Anglers Line Floating : RM150
Scientific Anglers Line Sinking : RM150
Simple Vise : RM80
Bobbin Holder : RM20
Fly Tying Thread : RM10
Craft Fur X 2: RM24
Deer Hair : RM80 (agak agak only) - This is for pellet flies
Some Hooks and Bead Chain Eyes : RM20
Total : RM1034 (Estimate)
Option Gila
Sage TCX Rod or Orvis Helios Rod : RM2700
Abel Reel : RM3000
Renzetti Vise : RM1500
Full Ceramic Bobbin Holder : RM85
Assortment of Thread : RM100
Assortment of Fly Tying Materials, Hooks, Eyes Etc : RM1000
Total : RM8385 (Estimate)
There you go. Of course you can combine anything between Option 1 all the way to Option Gila and if you take your time to look for the best deals in time, you’ll be able to get a good bargain.
In Penang, the shops that sell fly equipment are :
Zatshen : Lots of Budget and Mid Range rods and reels and lots of materials and vises to choose from.
Ah Peng’s : A few rods and perhaps some reels hidden in their store room (you have to ask them or else you wouldnt know). Ready made flies. I also notice a St. Croix Truimph combo set (Rod/Reel/Line) but didnt ask how much.
In Kuala Lumpur, the only place I know is Tacklebox Adventures in Subang. They are also on MFN. Here’s the link :
http://www.fishing.net.my/forum/forum.asp?FORUM_ID=46
In Singapore, there is Coho Fly Shop on Bali Lane just off Ophyr Road.
And there is also Five Dots shop belonging to Siow Chiang which is just around the corner. They have lots of old Hardy reels going at a bargain. But pls dont buy their rods coz they are just too old and are too heavy.
Another alternative is Ebay. Imagine thousands of retail shops who are trying to push off their stock and each having promotions now and then. Meaning there is always a bargain everyday!. I know of a few fellas who have been buying their fly stuff from Ebay and somehow they always get a good bargain. Just last week, I managed to buy a reel off a friend who got it from Ebay and I managed to buy it for about half the price of other retailers.
I hope I have managed to confuse you by now. So the only way to Un Confuse yourself is by attending our Fly Fishing and Tying Clinic and we’ll sort you out.</font id=“red”> [}:)]
