Fly Fishing

Hi.. How much does it take to get a start with fly fishing? Nothing fancy, just a basic gear to test the waters. Any help is very welcomed.

If you don’t know how to fish…
then you deserve to work!

Hi patin, u can try going to Tacklebox in subang jaya to enquire bout basic combo sets.. I got mine 9feet scierra 5 wt + okuma reel bout rm200+. Fly line depends on type.. about rm100+ and braided line as backing bout 100metres about rm40+.

Hope it helps

Oh btw, Nick’s in Maldives now.

So Mr. Patin, u might wanna wait for his return then… [;)] [:D]

Okay, thanks!

Yes that is as basic as you can get.

I have a little more to add.

Okuma Carina does not have much drag, get Sierra instead.

If a little more money is not a big issue, get TFO Pro series or Amin (IM6) rods instead. Trust me you tend to use them a little bit longer before deciding to upgrade compare to the very basic setup.

Good luck.

Novice, may i ask how much is the TFO pro series and Amin(im6) price range?

Thanks in advance.

Geno, I have both the TFO and the Amin…iianm, the TFO is around 500 rgt. and the Amins go for around 350. Both are good rods, and for a first one, I’ll go for Pak Amin’s.

I just got my 1st TFO Pro series from TackleBox last week.. which Nick recommended..
It’s a nicE rod! [:)] somemore got life time warranty!!! [:D]

Good Day,

You should be quite satisfied with the TFO rod. They really are great for the money.

dear suresh,i would advise you to buy from tacklebox as it will be cheaper and safer. flyrods and things got broken/lost in the mail before.just ask george or nick what you need.theres a wide range to choose from also and they can show you where to get good flyfishing .you also get free casting lessons .cheers.

Second that! [;)]

Yup Suresh, no arguments here…just about any fishing equipment is cheaper in Malaysia than anywhere else. Buying flyfishing equipment from UK is very expensive, even if you can get a refund on the 17.5% vat. Better you go see Nick at Tacklebox.

Btw, fishing equipment above the value of 18 GBP imported into the UK or any EU country attracts a “customs charge” … I just got hit with a 20 pound charge for a rod bought on ebay and sent to a relative in London to bring back home…aarrrggghhh.[:(]

thanks for the input guys. So i guess tacklebox is it then. But could someone recommend me a brand/model that is good for newbies + not that expensive?

Suresh bro,

I think Nick got a combo set offer (Sceirra rod & Okuma reel) starting from RM250… if I’m not mistaken. That you have to check directly with Nick…

The Okuma reel is fine but as previously mentioned by Master Novice & Sir Tony Wee, u might wanna go straight to M. Amin or TFO in rod department; which are much better in quality but without far-fetched prices.

Go to Nick. Ask for advice. Cast out some rods. U’ll get there. [;)]
