fly for tarpon

hi, assalamualaikum n salam sejahtera..
hi, mr haruan lover, dr.No and Mr sid..
i’m sorry that i’ve been away for a long time. exam is stil running..
i will be going back for my holiday in the month of May, in kedah. i would like to ask questions on the fly pattern that is suitable for tarpon, epecially at sungai rambai. recently i went there and flyfishing the tarpon with a no.6 size bright orange craft fur and chartouse green craft fur. it was only the pattern i know to tie now for PB but i want to try it with tarpons. but, to no success. can anyone lend me their knowldege on the right fly pattern for tarpon? Please[:)]

Syukoru-san,

I’ve never been to Sg. Rambai & I managed to go to only one tarpon trip (in Kg. Delek, Klang) in my entire fly fishing life… hahaha! Sad - I know. [:(]

But luckily I happened to land 2 of them using a No. 1 Tarpon Fly pattern which was chartreuse in colour. And the other one with a No. 2 popper which was also chatreuse/yellow in color. [:p]

Nevertheless, I dont swear by these flies for them poons. I think, deceivers, clousers, charlies, bend-back & the color white work wonders too. I guess the trick is to put lotsa of flash materials on the flies… hypothetically.

Surely the sifus here can explain better than me.

Happy Hunting! [;)]

thanks master riki..
tarpon at sungai rambai can be described as “Banyak gila” especially when u can see their rises everywhere [:D] but ur idea of using chartuese craft fur with a lot of flash material. emm what pattern ya,master riki.. i use a floating 5/6 wt..
stripping style, master riki? [:D]

Good Day,

When I lived in Singapore I used two patterns the most for tarpon. A small white/pearl Crazy Charlie and a simple streamer of synthetic material. The other pictured patterns worked well too, and not just for the poons… hehe. So, here are two photos. One of a box of smaller saltwater flies, and then a few flies themselves. Enjoy!

Nice flies there, Chris. [;)]

Stripping style actually varies from one place to another. And also the tidal condition coz that determine the routin / habits of thoze poons.

Most of the time, I’d usually do the simplest medium speed strip-&-pause. But some flyrodders say that sometimes (high odds) that tarpons grab the flies “on the drop”. Never experience that tho… so hard to comment more. [;)]

BTW, Chris… our poons are the smaller of the species. Not the bigger variant like they got in Everglades or somewhere… [:p]

Just letting u know… [;)]

Having fished for Bulan in our brackish rivers and also off Pulau Ketam, Chartreuse clousers seem to work very well, even at night by the fish farms without any luminous material added to the fly.So long as it mimics a baitfish and the fish is in feeding mode, you should get a strike .

Good Day,

Thanks for the compliments! Most of those flies are tied on size 2-4 hooks.

Riki_rahman - Yeah, if I remember correctly there are some who refer to the Asian tarpon os Ox Eye tarpon. I used to fish for them alot in Singapore. They were very dependable, once the tidal behaviour was figured out… hehe. I think my biggest was just shy of 1 kg…

Christopher

nice flies chris! wow… makes me wanna have a bite too hehehehhehe

here’s a fly that the tarpons over here in the north find tasty. or maybe they’re just kinky…introducing Kinky-Pinky:

sorry for the low res pic… my phone cam doesn’t have macro.

Holly cow! that is one huge Asian tarpon! One possibly for the record books! However, I have heard stories of Ox Eye up to 8 kg… although I am not sure any were truly documented.
