Fly / Spin rod mordification

This mordification is not by any means new. There are such rods being on sale in the US.However they do cost about US$200 and with postage is much more than I would want to pay, hence the study into mordifying a flyrod for both Fly and spining use. As a bonus, with the new bud section attached it does makes a reasonable spey casting (double handed) flyrod.

This was I how I did it before the bud mordification. The “duct-taped” rod did have happy memories with 4kg pacus, rohu, and numerous tilapias being hooked and landed.

Any ideas to further improve this mordification is most welcomed. I have thoughts of building the mordified bud with a lighter construction and to change the snake-eyes rings to std spining SIC rings to use 4lb firelines on a 1000 series reel.

EK,
can we use tica cetus for this fly rod?

mbax,

I do not see why not. It is just I do have a 1000 series reel handy. A cetus 500 will work just as well but have to watch the line capacity.

A further modification I had tried is to splice a meter of good old dacron braid to the main line and then another splice of another meter of fly tippet attached to a fly on the business end. The dacron when wet will provide the needed weight to cast a floating fly and have the fly actually float. Master HF Yong had also suggested to coating the dacron with a solicon spray to ensure that the line floats. This enable easier casting and stripping if required, almost to the actual fly fishing, I think but not all there yet.

Ek Tq very much.. will have a look at the fly rod next time i visit tackle shop…

Just a suggestion…
If u want a longer butt and dont want to strap ur reel tennessee style, just built a longger attachable and detachable rear grip like the one that u already have there, so that the reel can be attach to the original reel seat.to make it lighter, use a graphite woven tubing or kevlar carbon pipe for the material. Both material usually used for blank extension or for grip, light and durable material.Fit a cork to it and it will match the fore grip.I’ve seen a fly rods with 2 reel seat.1 situated in the normal fly rods reel seat and the other one is fixed for spinning reel some where up front in the fore grip.Theres a lot of idea bout spinning and fly rods that i saw in rodbuilding.org.

Ek pretty good job there, but knowing you, u should have just shove a PVC pipe to the back for a spinning handle. Or u got that back piece free? heh heh.

Your suggestion is good but I ususally get things done the cheap way as Lapala would attest to.

Two reel holder can be done but it would cost more and more importantly it would be heavier and unbalanced with too much weight to the bud.

Lapala, did thought of that, sholving a PVC pipe as a longer bud, but it is ugly and grip is poor. Anyway, this mordified bud cost me about RM50.

hi ekwong, your rod can be very useful for spey casting as well as spinning for small rivers.keep the ideas coming.

subang

the idea may be good, but now it is time to actually hook and land a fish with it. that would complete the exercise.

I try pvc before, but the material not rigid enuff and only limited length can be add to the butt before ur butt become whippy.Other than carbon tube,an old broken blank can be use.

EK,

Did you DIY both the extensions or you got it off the shelf ? i tried pvc tube but the feel is really odd…if you got it off the shelf mind sharing where you got it from and is RM 50 for two? thanks.

neuwin,

The labour cost is RM30 for each but you would have to source for the materials needed. It was done by a rod maker more as a favor than a commercial transaction.

Dear ekwong, where do I get the bud sections???

sorry for the late reply Slimfish, almostt forgot of this tread.

the bud section was custom made and cost about RM50 (RM30 for labour and RM20 for materials). However it must be said that Kok Meng at Tightlines did it more as a learning process rather than a commercial project. If you do make one, it may cost a bit more.

bro…
did U change the ring guide or still used the snake guide?

the rings are still snake eyes to facilitate fly-lines. it works well with light mono lines and I do not use braids which may damage the snake eyes.

EK,
I got something for you that I have been experimenting with. I spiral wrapped a Seeker two piece 7 foot 1-4 lb test glass rod and mated with Shimano Scorpion tiny one. The thing casts very light lures and we have been casting tiny little size 8 clousers to catch bluegills, crappies and bass close to shore. I will also soon be trying this for some walleye action as the fall comes into season. How far are you guys trying to cast? 2nite, if I can get on the water, I will try to measure the casting distance on this rig. The size of fish that can be landed is amazing!

Goh,

Without any additional weights, I can usually cast a simple clouser for about 20ft to 30ft.

I had also been trying a new idea first suggested by Master Yong to attach a lenght (about 2ft to 3ft) of floating flyline as weight to further the casting distance and to help keep the fly afloat longer. I had also try to attach a small fly popper-float about 3ft from the fly for the same effect.

Much that I dislike PB and JC, it is sometimes exciting to see a fly being taken on the water surface. On the floating rig as above, these are the only fishes (smallish one at that) being “co-operative” during my experiments at the Subang Lakes.

EK,
Using the smallest clouser size 8 with the second to smallest dumbbell eyes, this setup makes close to 20 feet…a little short consistently. Using slightly heavier clouser on size 6 hook with medium dumbbell, I can cast over 30. Clousers come thru weeds really well. Walleyes aren’t in yet. Will try more and let you know. BTW, at this size of casting, 2 and 4 lb mono casts better than the braid for distance but more possibility for birds nest.

Goh,

We definately have it better here with the same fishes available all year round. It is the sun and heat that would wear you down. Casting with a 9 footer requires quite a bit of casting room and few trees for shade.

I got myself a small spinning reel (a 1000 series) with 6lb abulon mono lines. lower poundage lines breaks too easily ith our snags and weeds.
