Fly

What type of fly for these species : Kelah, Tengas, sebarau and other exotic fresh water/mountainous stream fishes in Malaysia??? If possible attach some sample photos.

Hi Bro NF,

Based upon my shallow experiences with these kind of waters, I should say using charlies & gotcha flies would be proper. A small clouser would also be useful. These would be fine for hunting species like the tengas, sebarau & kelah.

But I’ve been also getting good response using nymph; particularly stone nymph & beadhead nymph, even when being stripped fast. Small fishes like sikang, tengas daun, bagoh & tebal sisik have been known to chump on these flies.

For dry flies, they’re the best weapon for surface feeders like kelisa & kaloi. Any dry fly that imitates winged ants, black ants, hopper & crickets are notorious for this purpose.

As of recently, I also found out small-sized spoonfly is also effective in targetting these clear-water species.

Good luck! [;)]

Thanks for the info, Bro Riki. But what about the color…what color is preferred??or is it depend of the condition of water…fast current, milky water or cristal clear water etc..

Colour-wise, everything muct be as close as the natural baitfish there. So excavation might be needed beforehand… [;)]

Black, brown & whitish might be good for dries & nymphs. As for wets; silver, gold & white would do just fine… [;)]

Good Day,

I agree for the most part with Riki Rahman. I did a little fishing in Penninsular Malaysia when I lived in S’pore a few years back. As far as stream fishing goes I would look toward the nymphs too. Shades of brown and or olive for nymphs. Size 12 down to maybe 16 hooks too. But I think one of the best things Riki Rahman mentioned was to take some samples next time. Turn over a few rocks and look at what bugs there are, Look at sticks and logs in the water too. Also, when nymph fishing you may wish to use a strike indicator (in other words a very samll fly fishing bobber) to help detect strikes or a big indicator dry fly with the nymph trailing behind it. As far as streamers are concerned, I think I would keep them no bigger than a size 6 2x long streamer hook. Again, think to match the color of the surroundings (river bottom) Like a pearl underbelly with either a tan/brown or olive top to the streamer. I prefer to use a material called Ice Dub or Ice Wing for these type of streamers. Very reflective and shiny with great color!

hi simonking.. it doesn’t matter whether the fish makan your fly or not… I scared after you got the hang of tying flies… you’ll spend more time tying flies than fishing… [:D]

Good Day,

Yuo might be onto something there fisheR! At least we have winter here where I live so many lakes and streams get covered with ice… that makes for good fly tying time… hehe.

Christopher

Christopher and fisheR,

That’s one of the upside of fly fishing. Weather and time permits we can go fishing. If not sit at the bench and start tying. I’ve probably have more time at the bench than fishing now at least hahaha[:D]

Good Day,

Simonking - interesting question. Let me give you a little background on where I live as that is determinate of what I mostly fish for. I live in Grand Rapids, Michigan, U.S.A. Grand Rapids is located in west central Michigan. Michigan is the state that looks like a mitten on the map, surrounded by the Great Lakes. We also experience all four seasons. Summer can be as warm and humid as Malaysia, where as winter can be quite artic with several feet of snow, frozen rivers and lakes. So we get a little of all kinds of weather. With this said, so too will the species available to us be effected by our climate. So… fly flingers around here have a good smorgasbord to work with depending on weather conditions. “Warm” weather fish include carp, bluegill (panfish in general), large mouth bass, small mouth bass, walleye, pike, and the like. In Autumn the runs of anadromuos fish begin with coho and king salmon as well as brown trout, lake trout and the highly regarded steelhead. Althogh some steelhead begin showing up in the fall, their prime spawning months are March and April. Some of us die hard fly fisher’s brave the cold witner months in search of steelhead that are moving up river to spawn. While doing so we may also catch a trout or two. Speaking of trout - the general season for trout opens the last Saturday in April and last until September 30th. Although, there are a few rivers and lakes open all year to the taking of trout. We have brown trout, rainbow trout/steelhead, and brook trout which is not a trout at all, but really a char.

Not to dodge your question, but I like them all! Each has a certain unique quality to each species that makes them all special. From small, yet very tasty, bluegill that think they are bigger than a horse yet gullible. To discerning brown trout that have become wary and wise. The the brute strength of a salmon or carp. The majestic leaping ability of the steelhead is something to be seen. Or the royal and gorgeous colors of a brook trout getting ready to spawn. I can’t say no to any of them!

Good Day,

Novice - Pearl/White, Chartruese, White/Red. Those worked for me in Singapore.

Simon - Same thing happens around the globe. There are people who are not satisfied until they take everything! Sad really. Treat nature like a buffet, take what you need, not what you want.

Hi fisherR
Good of you to post pic of this fly which by the way is Nick Ooi’s of TackleBox creation. However, in the fly fishing world of ettiqute, one should always, out of respect, include the name of the fly and/or the person who created it when posting pics. For example the Dahlberg Driver Fly, no matter how you tie the driver fly it’s still called the Dahlberg Driver Fly, same goes for Lefty’s Deceiver. There’s more than 30 tarpon flies created to date by different people; Charlies has more than 10. The fist Charlie invented is the Crazy Charlie.
I introduced Nick’s split tail fly in Rod & Line February 2007 issue and named it TACKLEBOX SPLIT TAIL FLY. The only thing I modified was the body below the eye. Not only does it hook up sebaraus in freshwater but also toman and pujuk.
I’ll be conducting a fly fishing clinic this Saturday at Tackle Box and will touch a little bit on the Fly Fishing Federation. Hope you can make it and pick up more tips on fly fishing.
Regards
Pak Amin
