Fly

Good Day,

Interesting point Pak Amin. Yet well stated. Shhot, most of the flies I tie now are of my own creation, but I will give credit where credit is do if the fly is not an original design by me.

Hi fisherR
Good of you to post pic of this fly which by the way is Nick Ooi’s of TackleBox creation. However, in the fly fishing world of ettiqute, one should always, out of respect, include the name of the fly and/or the person who created it when posting pics. For example the Dahlberg Driver Fly, no matter how you tie the driver fly it’s still called the Dahlberg Driver Fly, same goes for Lefty’s Deceiver. There’s more than 30 tarpon flies created to date by different people; Charlies has more than 10. The fist Charlie invented is the Crazy Charlie.
I introduced Nick’s split tail fly in Rod & Line February 2007 issue and named it TACKLEBOX SPLIT TAIL FLY. The only thing I modified was the body below the eye. Not only does it hook up sebaraus in freshwater but also toman and pujuk.
I’ll be conducting a fly fishing clinic this Saturday at Tackle Box and will touch a little bit on the Fly Fishing Federation. Hope you can make it and pick up more tips on fly fishing.
Regards
Pak Amin

Pak Amin,

Thank you for the info..
I know this is a split tail fly.., but dunno who created it. I picked it up when one of the members was tying this split tail at TackleBox last Saturday [:D]
It’s very interesting when it comes to fly tying… so many patterns yet i dunno their “names”.. well, excuse me for being a newbie.. [;)]

Guys,

As far as I know this pattern is called Split Tail Minnow. If I am not mistaken it was created/modified by ‘Ol Man’ GP Goh. It is the first pattern I tied which I learn from the Ol’Man himself. For the record, he is not that old. It is just the way he talks. [:D] So I think I know a bit of the history of this fly. The original pattern has epoxy body to make the fly heavier and sinks faster.

This pattern is a modification of the Half&Half pattern which was created by Bob Clouser and Lefty Kreh so it is not a so called original pattern, hence it was called Split Tail Minnow which is not a person’s name. We have seen to many people copy other people’s pattern and then name the pattern their own name. There is nothing wrong with that but like Pak Amin said a Dahlberg is still a Dahlberg no matter how it is modified.

The fly is good for toman, sebarau and many others. Some of the guys that I know using this fly claimed it works best with orange or red grizzly ‘split’ tail or because of actions from the split tail. I also have caught keli and jelawat using this fly. But I am not sure I can repeat catching these 2 species again.

There is also another pattern created by those ‘old’ guys who used to hang around a lot at Tacklebox. It is called Christmas Tree, not the other Christmas Tree pattern you can find on the web. That is my favourite fly for river fishing especially for sebarau. But there is a catch. You got to strip like mad and must know how to use current to speed up your stripping to make life easier. If you want to know more talk to Master Yong. He is the one who taught me.

actually the christmas tree fly mentioned by novice closely resembles a fly called the wiggle tail fly which is made of tinsel or pearl hollow braid.
