My opinion as a newbie:
1.It is a good workout and is more active and interesting than just throwing bait and waiting for a fish to bite. Also, it is rewarding when fish take the flies that you tie yourself.
I think flyfishing is more of a sight-based technique, so fish have to be able to see. Another thing is you need a bit more space so you can fly properly.
I spent RM220 on my flygear (rod, reel, line), and about another RM400 on fly tying stuff and materials. If you don’t tie your own flies then I guess you don’t need the vice, bobbins and other materials. Is it expensive? I guess that is relative. My Sustain spinning reel alone cost RM750, so that’s more than all the money I spent on my fly gear?
In Penang, need to go Zatshen, but Ah Peng wil be starting to bring in stuff soon.
Check out some of the catches in saltwater flyfishing, but they use heavier weight equipment.
Just need to tie flies which look like something the fish want to eat.
I just started too. But it is fun and gives you a good workout! [:)]

bro, casting and fly is different. u need to try it to understand the techniques.
Is it better than the others ?
whether its better or not its up to ur own judgement.
What sort of water that allows this kind of technique ?
I can say that u can use it in all sorts of water. the techniques are pretty much the same as lure casting. lures can come in various types of sizes and also colours. so does the flies. if u wan bright coloured flies, u use bright coloured materials. u have a floating lure, we have floating flies. sinking lures, sinking flies. advantages of flyfishing is dat u can cast very small flies(much smaller than the smallest lure u can find) without any weights and also u can get a great casting distance. same goes to big flies. and also the presentation of the fly.
Does it that costy ?
Costy??? that depends on urself. it has a wide range of prices for u to pick. like wat sibehsong said.
Where to find the equipment for it ?
Zatshen, Penang or Tacklebox, Subang
Possible to have a big catch by flyfishing ?
Yes. Checkout the fly for sail thread. people do land sails on fly too.
Type of bait ?
u won’t have to use any bait for fly. the fly itself at the end or ur line is the bait. same as lures.
Thank you seniors…
like wat pidaus said, we’re not seniors. i’m just a beginer. just sharing part of my knowledge in flyfishing.
go to tackle box n see nick. try it out. i’m sure u will find it interesting. [:)]
choo, your 100m cast with fly, I think you qualify for senior liao… hehehehe.

Flyfishing is an art. A fisho is not complete without getting involved in fly fishing. However, you need to be patient cos not all fishes in malaysia readily take flies. Yesterday i saw an Abu Garcia 9’ WT 5/6 set complete with reel, fly line and backer line, and traveller rod bag priced at Rm230 i think in Kepong tackle. The rod is designed for traveller as the bag is only 2 feet long. I almost took it until i saw made in China mark, so i am not sure of the quality. If you are not serious you might want to give it a try, otherwise go to the Tackle Box, Subang.
I strongly disagree the statement “… not all fishes in Malaysia readily take flies..”
Here are my toughts; depending on what you are after, tying the most suitable flies to suit the feeding pattern of the fishes is key to fly fishing anywhere. We cannot use flies that do not resemble anything else the fishes would take. Dronfly is doing a great job at promoting our Malaysian flies and is sharing some of his flies on this forum. I think many people that I have meet say the same thing, because fly fishing is a sport where there are a lot of grey areas. Not many people have the necessary knowledge to start this sport. Hence, they usually guess things and create misreprentations. Most Malaysian fishes are infact ready to take on flies, if they resemble the food pattern of their diet.
I strongly believe fly fishing is some of the most exciting and challenging sport that one can pursue. This is a whole new different ball game. Forget about casting using the weight of the bait or lures, but instead fly fishing is about casting its line. This excite you when you see the fishes going after the fly that you tie. It makes you shiver after a good fight with the fish.
For beginners, I would advise not spending any money first. They should go online (or other sources) and read a lot about fly fishing. Especially the cost, this is where a lot of people think its im-practical to buy a few hundred or even thousand dollars of fly equipment. After when they understand what they will be experiencing, I would ask around if there are any fly anglers that they know and seek advise. Then ask the fly fisherman to explain and show you what fly-fishing is all about. I am sure if you kindly ask them, they would certainly be very happy to share knowledge. Or better yet, if there are fly fishing club(s), you can certainly seek advise and even borrow a fly outfit to try out. Finally, when you have a feel about fly fishing and catching your first fish on your own flies excites you. Welcome to the game! You are hooked…

Is it better than the others ?
Yes. Because of that I’ve not used my other fishing gears for quite sometime now. I only kinda ‘force’ myself to use the other fishing gears (kinda sad to see all my branded fishing gear just stayed on the racks man).
What sort of water that allows this kind of technique ?
All, seriously (well I’ve not tried using fly fishing for prawns). There’s different kind of casts to suit different situation. This actually is part of fly fishing fun. It kinda challenge you to be creative.
Does it that costly ?
No. My fly fishing gear is not costly as I always use them. If you have the gears which you seldom or never use… then THAT IS COSTLY haha (ok ok I have to admit I don’t have the Tibor, the Bogden, the Sage or Winston or Scott etc.)
Where to find the equipment for it ?
More places now. Tacklebox in Subang, Riverside Angler in Kota Bharu, etc. Fly making wise, the anglers have an option to be creative here. Create flies with whatever material that you have (like your neighbours chicken feathers… serves 'em right the noisy lil cluckers hahaha)
Possible to have a big catch by flyfishing ?
Well, people have landed 300+ lb shark on fly. So, if that is not big then NO. But flyfishing will give you the chance to catch the smallest of fish and that’s fun too you know.
Type of bait ?
Flies u mean? Well, depends on what you are aiming for. Was it Match the Hatch someone said?
Thank you seniors…
Now, you’re not talking to me. I’m just starting…
Interesting discussion, here are my thoughts on this:
Personally, I don’t think fly fishing is better than other conventional methods. I believe it is just a different presentation given to the targeted species. It can be better than other methods, given if; you know what you are doing. As in tying the correct insect cycle the fish are feeding (freshwater) and tying the correct flies to match the feeding pattern (saltwater).
Any geographic location with water column will allow fly fishing as long as there are fishes in there. You fly fish in many situation, offshore, inshore, rivers, and many others. Will depends on what you are fishing for.
It could be expensive and can be least expensive too, depending what you are willing to spend. Some people go to the extreme, where they buy a bamboo rod for more than RM10k. As a beginner RM150 – RM250 is the ideal sweet spot to spend. This will get you started on the lightest outfit.
Can you land bigger game fish with fly? Absolutely! There are people that I know fish for large tunas and mahi-mahi offshore. The average tuna can be from 40-60lbs. Of course they are using a completely different set, large arbor reel, heavy saltwater rod and wt#13 lines. In Florida, tarpon’s are most commonly caught on fly #10, they average at 100lbs each.
As mentioned by other forumer’s flies are weightless hook with bait resemblance of what the targeted fish are feeding. Dronfly (one of the forumers) should be credited for sharing a lot of the Malaysian insects and baits. You can refer under fly fishing’s thread “Sharing fly patterns”. They will give you some idea of what this is all about.
3 to 4 piece rods , easy to carry around (sneaking out for fishing)
No need to fool around with smelly bait anymore. One little box of flies is all you need. Compared to a big box of lures.
You get to look like Indiana Jones for a while.
In case of robbers they dont wanna try getting near you. (WHIP!)
As someone already mentioned , the satisfaction of conning the fish with few strands of bulu.
It is possible to actually try it on friend’s equipment or even learn it first to see if you personally like it. Then there’s a question of do you or can you go flyfishing all the time? (your group of fishing kakis who dont fly)
Hi there, i do not know if whether my question has been answered or not. I am a really fresh meat on fly fishing. I need few advices..
With RM200 budget (hehehehe..sorry if it is a small amount), can you identify the fly set (rod, reel and line) that I manage to have? Also appreciated if all taiko can give the name of the gears ( I mean the name of rod, reel and line)…
Then, will be happy if any taiko here can give me the direction to tackle box from federal highway? I am new in KL..so not good enough in KL mapping. Makasih..Hope to get a good response from all of you..Makasih againnnnnnn…
“Ongkos takdek, ati mau mancing jugak, pakai murah-murah je lah jadiknya…he..he..he..”
hi wan_puyu, for RM200 u can get the abu garcia fly set at tackle shops near u. it is a good buy. it comes with a rod, reel, fly line + leader, and rod case. as for the directions to tackle box, i cant help with dat. i’m not from kl. maybe the other taiko’s from kl can help. dron??? andrew??? anyone??? hehehehe…
definately saw this ABU setup at SS2 Anglers Fever shop. It was, if I am not mistaken RM238. Possibily with some discount if you are a PeMM member and flash your membership card.
this is a beginner’s set and if you do come to like flyfishing, you may upgrade later.
In short as many had explained, in flyfishing there is NO bait, only a fly. The so called fly is of artifical treads, feathers or any combinations tied to a hook to resemble some common insect or small fish in the water.
