Hello everyone!
Greetings from freezing dark Finland.
The reason why I am writing here is that I’ll be on a honeymoon in Langkawi around 20-28th March 2008. I’m planning to take my flyrod with me (although my forthcoming wife doesn’t no it just yet [8D]). I’m thinking #8 rod and some salt water fishing, probably. Can I find any fishing guides with boats in there or even boats with driver to show me places? Whatabout the shore? Is it worth to try just casting at the shore? What about the freshwater fishing in Langkawi, what kind of fishes I can get and where are hot spots in Langkawi?
p.s. I’m sorry if my questions are stupid, I have never really fished in tropic, just here in north; Finland, Sweden, Norway.
about your question, its nothing silly about that[:D]. well i’ve been to Langkawi before, but i havent have a chance to flyfish there. i’ve came across a website http://www.malaysiasite.nl/rebakeng.htm
that you can flyfish there by boat. maybe you can email the place to find out.
There were previous questions asked about Langkawi fishng before. You can do a quick search on “Langkawi” (and also don’t forget to click on the Archive check box also). Yes, Langkawi has some great hotspots but you will need a guide.
Langkawi would be great especially if you are coming from freezing Finland after a hard day of skiing and snowboarding.
Previously, we had a few international guests who also asked us about Langkawi and I noticed a very familiar trend – the guys never tell their spouses they are going fishing!!! Hahaha, I guess this is a phenomena of what guys face around the world.
Hopefully, some of the guys here will provide you a phone number to call soon.
Good luck and welcome soon to Malaysia!

Oskari,

Will let you know the outcome once whe finish our island hopping adventure hehehe
No pain no gain, dont try dont know… muahahahahaha
A little suggestion … hmm you are going to have your “HONEYMOON” in Langkawi so i suggest you do not go fishing. Spend more time with ur new wife =). Make it a special experience for her. Just my 2 cents.
I don’t know who my grandfather was; I am much more concerned to know what his grandson will be.

Manage your time, and go fishing. Take your wife with you. Langkawi is surrounded with saltwater so if you ask my opinion, I would regret if I don’t go fishing.
If, I am visiting Langkawi & want to fly fish there. I would hire a local guide (deep sea) and bring my fly tying equipment (these are easily packed into the luggage). Ask ahead of time (before going to Langkawi) what type of fish they will be catching during that time and the bait they would be using. Then, tie accordingly to the description. Common bait used are squid, indian mackerel or pilchard resemblance. Tie or buy similar flies to these description. Online stores are great, or better yet, try ebay for flies.
Depending on what you are catching, wt 8 is a little heavy . I would do a wt 6 (there aren’t many big game there). However, in saltwater, it does not matter which type of line you are using.
I know on the north west corner of island, (near to Datai resort), you can catch “ikan sebelah” or Tropical left eye flounder. Saltwater clouser, shrimp resemblance, or crab resemblance will land you these fish. They are found near sandy bottom by the rocks beside medium fast moving water. Otherwise, ask your guide what would be best to catch at that time.
Have fund & share you passion with your wife. Good Luck!

Hi,
If you are fishing from the shore, there aren’t too many choice in Langkawi. However if you insists, you can try catching ‘todak’ near any pier in Langkawi. Just for fun.
Try using #1 line wt, and any bright colors flies, #8 or #6, I find ‘todak’ loves red, gold and silver.
Otherwise, if you can find access, (which i doubt it, northwest corner of the island, currently owned by The Datai hotel) its a great place for ‘ikan sebelah’ and some small grouper too (includes all mix bag of grouper).
Try shrimp resemblance (top pic) or mantis shrimp resemblance (lower pic). They work great there. Have fun!
hi osse! welcome to malaysia!!
i went to langkawi just a few days before the LIMA07 this year, an enjoy my stay there. my brother is having his practical training there,in sheraton langkawi.he took me to several places for flyfishing, somewhere near the Mat Cincang yacht marina and near Pekan Kuah. small trevallies can be found in abundance, provide the time is right. there are also some places ( i dont know its whereabout) that he caught small tarpons and ladyfish. in the places far from the beaches, normally in swamps and paddy fields, you can go for snakeheads, or haruan. most of the flies are poppers, gurglers and insect resemblence..
better still, get a guide there and he will show you the way [:)]
Thanks to all who have replied.
I haven’t had really time to plan our trip because the wedding arrangements and bloody work is taking my time totally. I quess that I just take my rod with me and try to find some guide when I get there. I suppose that I have to take my #8 rod, because it is 4 piece and my 5# rod is 3 piece and I think it wont fit to my luggage.
Just two weeks to go and I’m really excited to get away from here to the sunny Malaysia. I have plenty of insect imitations if I go for freshwater, hope I can find some time to tie few shrimps nad poppers for saltwater.

Moi Oskari,
If (and only if) you are staying at the hotel called Awana Porto Malai, it has some kinda rocky lagoon right next to it. You can fly fish there if you’re staying at the hotel. Otherwise most hotels in Langkawi (those by the sea by the way) has some means to take you out to the surrounding islands. Lotsa fish. Why not also try the Rapalas and Kuusamos there [:D][:D][:D].

Terve pellet_fly,
Unfortunately I’m not staying at that Hotel. Thanks for the tip anyway. I’ll probably leave my Fat Raps and Professors at home [:p]
