Hi, I am thinking of buying a 10 feet porta-bote for mangrove fishing. Any advice where one can be purchased? Any user of such boat can share his experience? Thanks.
I trawled the net and discovered there is an agent for “Instaboat” in Malaysia. Like the porta-bote, this is also a folding boat However, had emailed the listed but no reply. Anyone has bought such a boat? Thanks.

bro, du yu know the price of Porta Bote? it’s more than RM6K if I’m not mistaken..
for that price, better opt of aluminum boat which is much sturdy, durable, stable and cheaper compare to porta Bote.

All I can say about Porta Bote is - marvellous! I had a 10 footer, closer to 11 actually. It is quite spacious for 2 people, and probably seat 3 easily. However, need to watch the weight though, I think total capacity is around 500lbs, so if you have 2 big boys already in the boat, better leave the other one on the bank ![]()
Used it many times, and even now, it still is hard to open the boat from the folded position. The manuf. says that it’ll soften it time after use, so perhaps that’ll be true. 60pound weight, I managed carry, open and set it up all by myself, despite being on the bottom list of any body building (any class..) contest. Takes a bit of strength and strategy to open the sides without getting ‘swallowed’ by it. Mine came with wooden seats & transom, I believe the newer ones comes with plastic. Keep the locking pins and etc in safe place, if not boat cannot stay open. No leaks whatsoever, and floats high in the water unloaded, like they said.. 4 inches of draft.
Haven’t tried to put an outboard on it yet, but am planning to buy 6hp Suzuki 4 stroke which is at the maximum transom weight the boat can take. (have to buy ob before getting married meh, if not, very slim chance to get one
). I used it with Minnkota 36pounder, which moved it along nicely. Rowing it malaysian style without oar rings gonna kill you for sure, so be sure to have good battery if you gonna use thruster. Boat is very responsive, changes direction without much effort at the tiller. Can do turns in its own legth too. Stability is superb, you can stand without much problem. Just need to get used to the boat floor, since it’ll give a little bit as you step on it.
Best thing about it :- fold it up, put it on a balcony out of sight until the next time you want to use it. Hell, put it in your room if you have the space!
Buy direct from US if you have to, cost less than local. Not much to go wrong anyways.

hehehe… you wait until you get those choppy waters… big lakes such as Kenyir and Temenggor sometimes has this kind of nasty water. you’ll know what I mean..
