For a Beginner???

Hi all… i have just graduated(soon), and i am looking to get a 4x4, as cheap as possible. :-). Dont need anything too extreme , just something to get me fishing.

What i mean is i’m not gonna go extreme offroading. I just want something to get me places, but a normal car cant do that. Any suggestions? My price range is <20K. So, i’m left with the jimny, Roscta, and our lovely Kembara. Performance wise, the jimny and roscta will beat the kembara, but as i know(correct me if im wrong) those are really meant to get a bully. I just want a vehicle that can bring me places.

I need something that can get me to work everyday, and also get me places to fish. Kembara seems to be the best bet now. As the jimny and asia motor’s roscta have parts, but kinda hard and costly…

Any ideas? You ppl always have ideas… I’d love to hear it!!!

when buying a vehicle … a few things only to consider ..
your budget .. this is obvious
availability of parts and costs .. do a quick research with spare part shops and mechanics
consumption .. if possible check with other owners of same vehicle model
your taste in the vehicle design and practicality .. YOUR TASTE .. hahahahaa
condition of vehicle .. get a mechanic to go with u to view and inspect if possible
market price .. check papers and used car dealers for the model u are considering

if all conditions above are satisfied .. then happy hunting and enjoy your new vehicle !!!

Long live Rock & Roll!!

Suresh,

If you are going to graduate soon, you should start off with a car that suits your budget and for your occasional fishing hobby to take you places. Remember, when you buy a car, you buy a liability (it keeps depreciating) and not an asset.

It should be affordable and the maintenance is reasonable, including easy access to cheap spare parts. 4x4 is fun to drive but they are also heavier than your usual vehicle and will consumer more fuel.

Performance wise the Jimmy and Rocsta will beat the Kembara but all cars can reach 110 km/h sooner or later, only how fast you want to reach it. If you want easy to maintain, slightly more modern and creature comfort (still can have a chick in it), personally, I’ll go for the Kembara because parts are available and workshops are plentiful. And as you said “i’m not gonna go extreme offroading”, so this should suit you fine.

Never buy Korean 4x4. Ask Jam, Sthang or myself.

Thanks for the links and information… so kembara would be a good choice for a starter then…

hiya guys,

been mulling over whether to spring for a 2nd hand vehicle for our fave pastime and double up as family runaround. prefer manual but auto’s a boon for wifey.
rush and exoras are too new, ie too expensive for now
looking for 1600cc, 1800c is the max i can afford. good if loan is possible. any views/comments on the mitsu iO 1800cc?

this baby will be taken to the usual spots in perak, terengganu and mining ponds, too

rods are mostly 1pc with the longest being 6.5’
1 blue coleman icebox
1 (or 2, if space is available) white, long coleman - for long trips
otherwise, it’s just 2-3 rods, tackle box, bait bucket, collapsible landing net
mebbe a mate or two so we can all go in one vehicle for convenience’s sake

kembara rm11000 and below
had one for 5.5 years (why on earth are interest rates for local cars so much higher than nons?)
timing belt change around rm700
tyres 200+/pc
rubber seal for auto tranny cracked/broke rm1200 to take it apart, change, reassemble
FC, baaaaad
love the height, manoeuvrability and fold down seats for extra space and the LSD

AD resort rm14,000-34,000
extra space for cooler/ice box, rods, gear and tonneau cover very attractive
some mechs claim engine troublesome - is this true?

subaru wagon rm6000-8000
reliable
love the space again, but no tonneau [V]
worried about availability and cost of parts, cost to do up

opel zafira/chevy nabira rm20,000-30,000
space and safety features
family oriented

kangoo <rm20,000+
space for stuff
economical?
i can live with the looks

kenari
too expensive for its age and features or lack of it

any other hatches, estates that might fit the bill?
tips, ideas, advice, brickbats welcomed. [:D]
