Fresh and Saltwater crossover flies

Good Day,

The Whole Group:

Floaters (foam underbodies)

Ice Dub Freshwater streamers

Sinking and “Clouser” like streamers

General streamers and a two shrimp.

With regard to the last photo (general streamers and shrimp) A few things to mention. The shrimp are not my original pattern. I seem to remember seeing them on the http://www.barflyfish.com site tied by a Capt. Greg Bowdish. The one at bottom center does glow in the dark - very bright too! The fly above it is the Norms Shminnow originally by Norm Zeigler. Skinny green one on bottom right has a rattle in it too.

Hi Christopher,

Nice fly collections photo you have there. The leftmost fly in the top row of “The whole group” photo really looks like surf candy to me.

By the way, it would be nice if we can share some fly design fundamentals (not shapes lah) in future ya [;)].

Rgds,
Pellet Fly

Good Day,

Thanks pellet. Feel free to ask questions.

Do you guys know where can i learn to tie my own fly or know any good step-by-step website? I’ll have my own vise next week and i need to learn it pretty soon. Simple fly will do. I’m running out of flies which I’ve purchased from fishing dealers and i reluctant to ask for flies from other fly fisher here. BTW, I’m from KK, Sabah.

Hi Christopher,

I’ve been looking at some pic of those realistic flies. No doubt they look great. But has anyone done any comparison - fishing wise - whether the realistic one catches more fish compared to the not-so-real one?

In the first place, I wonder if a flyfisherman would want to actually use the fly which took painstaking time to tie [:)]

  • Pellet_Fly - easy to tie, loved by fish [:D]

Good Day,

Hi Pellet! Well - I would classify flies in three categories. Impresionistic, realistic and art. The first two categories are fishable. The “realistic” flies have proven their worth over and over agin. Usually for one of two reasons - highly pressuered water where a lot of fishermen puond the water or for veery picky fish.

Christopher

Hi Christopher,

Thanks for enlightening the categories. I suppose I can live with the realistic level [:D]. Been tying for a while now but generally following ‘establised’ flies only. Still keenly figuring out the art of fly trigger points (even without the movement in the first place). Seems like a whole lot to learn… but thats the fun[:D][:D][:D].

By the way, what do you think of those (mainly) saltwater flies with lips (like those on plugs/lures)? Not easy to shape though.

Pellet Fly

Good Day,

Pellet - I am a fan of flies with lips. Gives great action to the fly like a lure or rapala. However, you are correct in your assumption. One must be very careful when tying them to make sure they are totally ballanced. If not they will twist or spin vs wiggle. I also find that a smaller lip is better than a large lip.
