Furled Leaders

[:)]
I was wondering … has anyone made a furled leader before or attempted to make one?? [:D]
I browsed thru’ the internet and the process was kinda confusing [:o)]

Is furled or twined leaders better than the conventional mono leaders? [;)]

Furled leaders ARE for fly fishing.. [;)]

Good Day,

Well... First, as fisheR stated, they are for fly fishing. These "braided" leaders have some advantages. First, they last much longer than conventional mono single strand leaders. Do to their construction, the "braid", they can cushion the tippet better. The multiple strands also make for a stronger leader.

Chris,
Thanks for the clarification.. [:)]
Are this “braided” mono leaders or should I say furled leaders widely used by fly fisherman ?

I have been reading and gathering info on this furled leader and I guess it would be a nice “project” to do.. [:D]

With all the information I have gathered from the internet on furled leaders, namely the websites below:

http://www.flyangler.ca/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=45&Itemid=31&limit=1&limitstart=1

http://www.hipwader.com/2003/making-your-own-twined-leader

I started my “furled leader” project and it was a SUCCESS!! [:)]

I bought a pine wood plank from IKEA, some screws and timber handles from a furniture hardware shop to construction the board. I choose the pine wood because it’s the most workable timber available. In other words, pine wood is soft. It took me an hour to put it together.

That’s the board I used to make my furled leader.

Now for the difficult part. Arranging and looping the line on the board to make the leader. It took me another hour to figure out the arrangement and twisting the line with an electrical drill to form the leader. I used a 6lb mono line for this project.

The most important tools is the electrical drill.

The outcome of my furled leader was OK. I finish-off the furled leader by making a “shorb loop” at both ends.

That was SATISFYING!! [:D]

Hi,

Has anyone actually used this type of leader? I heard its good for dry fly. I’m interested to know since I’m quite hooked with dry fly fishing also. Care to share the experience?

Also heard that furled leaders can be made with different materials apart from mono. And are there any difference in the leader for different line weight?

-Pellet Fly-

For dry fly, I normally used thread by Uni product, the best. This leader turn like a dream. The best thing about this leader is, it will act as an absorber to light tippet.

For different line weight, just experiment with different mono diameter. Normally for 5/6 weight, I just used 2-4 pound mono.

Hi.. [:)]
I do agree with alpocot. Making the furled leader is kinda fun.
I make my own furled leaders using mono 2lb. for my 6 wt rod and have been using it for quite sometime now.
Believe me, it turn and open up beautifully.. [:D]

But some people have doubts on using this kinda leaders. They’d prefer straight forward leader (tying several different poundage of floro-carb using surgeon knots) [;)] and don’t want the hassle and double making this sort of leaders…

People have their preferences… [:)]

dear fisher

thank u for the info. i think at the moment i’m more comfortable buying furled-leader than making my own…
Earlier i got 2 pcs of 8" WT5/6 leader from TB. yesterday i’ve found a shorter leader at 6"6’…

today i’ll test which length is more suitable for my casting ability. probably i’ll order from u more on the length i’m comfortable with.

dear fisher,
i really enjoyed using the furled leaders. i’ve tested both 8’ and 6’6" leader lengths. i’m comfortable with the 6’6" length. i want to order 4 pieces of 6’6" WT5/6 in green( similar to the ones found in Tacklebox) from u. thanks, inform me onece the item is ready .

Interesting topic. Does anyone of you who are using the furl leaders have any favorite length and taper to suit our local fishing conditions? What about locally available material for it? Mono, tying thread or fluro? I’m kinda bend toward tying thread with a braid or mono core, seem better suited to our “ferocius” fishes here heh heh.

From the info on the web seem a logical starting point be adopting trout tapers for our more timid species and pike/muskie tapers for our venerable Toman. What about Sebarau, something in between? Care to share your thoughts and experiments?

length depends on individual preference and casting capability
