cheers, lets eat…

This brings back memories. When I was small (“…and Christmas trees were tall…” Bee Gees), I used to catch these almost everyday, from Sg Korok, flowing near my house. I bit of worm hanging from a stick float (literally made from a stick) does the trick.

Yes, we call them “ikan ubi”. Funny, never did try eating them. You could say I was doing catch-and-release then! Anyway, I was more inclined to catch the glamour fish those days: haruan, puyu and ikan putih.

The fish is definitely more gregarious than soon hock/ketutu, with lots of thrashings when hooked. I dont think they grow big. The biggest I caught was about 20cm/8in.

Bro JB - Sg Korok tu kat kedah?

No Bro, there’s another Sungai Korok which flow through Kangar City (ahem) and joins the bigger Sg Perlis.

Anyway, it’s all irrelevant now. A former chief minister decided to divert the river, turn it into a longkang, and cover the thing with concrete to create a jogging track that nobody uses.

Now it’s the unofficial mosquito breeding factory for Kangar. And we actually pay these guys salaries! And unlike the ikan ubi, there are tons of them.
