I have kept fish similar to these, but not snakehead. I can deduce or speculate based on my knowledge of other fish.

I have no idea how to tell male from female!

Breeding pair needs to be fit and healthy and brought into breeding condition. This usually involves feeding well and creating a rise in temperature and in the case of snakehead, a rise in oxygen level in the water.

Pair will fight if kept together. Divide the tank with a pane of glass. You have to judge when the fish are ready to be introduced together and observe them carefully, lest one kills the other.

They will clear a patch of weed and lay their eggs which hatch in about 48 hours. Parents do not need to be fed once they have spawned.

The young initially survive on their egg yolks but will soon require small food. They do not have lungs initially and the ability to breath air develops after a week or two. This is why a rise in oxygen level is necessary to induce breeding. The young Haruan cannot survive in water conditions that an adult can and usually the rainy season will bring higher water levels and increased oxygen levels in order to stimulate breeding.

In an aquarium, because of the space required, breeding might be difficult.

Anyone help with more specifics?

I have a pond behind my house. When the haruan fry are first hatched, the whole pond looks red with them. One would think that the pond will be full of haruan after a while. But that is not the case. Not that many make it to adulthood. I’m told that they eat their young. Any comments/confirmation?

Actually I used rear tilapia but a few years back there was a BIG flood and the pond overflowed, so I lost all the fish in it. The flood also brought along the haruan which has almost eliminated all other species of fish, except a few hardy ones.

haruan or any other snakeheads can be captive breed if the breed couple in the right environment. Most snakhead are mouthbroader. snakehead pairing up naturally means, its hard to just put one male and female in one place then try to breed them.snakeheads pair up for life and pairing up in a group. To differentiate male and female snakeheads is not an easy task, some can differentie with color and pattern, but mostly differentiate by body shape and head profile.

for more information, you can look up at www.snakeheads.org

i dont see why its hard to breed haruans .ask any pay pond owner and they will say the fish is a nuisance and its difficult to get rid of them.it is widely believed that when we catch two fish from the same spot the male is the smaller of the two.there may be more than one male though or even two females sharing one male.

subang

in pond is different stories coz, most of the haruans or snakeheads already in group and pairing up, to put a male and a female in a aquarium to breed is hard, most of the time it will fight. Unless its already pairing up or keeping two juvi, male and female together, but again we cannot differentiate male and female in juvi stage.

TP,
I guess the taste for rared haruan are not as good as the counter part in the wild. I have fished those in the wild.
I still think C&R is a good idea, where place often frequent by haruan anglers is wise to C&R and take what you want only. Where place is less frequent we can take slightly more, knowing that there are still abudant.
Conservation is important, look at the place in Europe, US and Australia there are season to fish and lenght, weight and numbers which one can take home. Unlike here we can fish all year round. At the rate the butchery here is tremendous, where cars can reach almost a bonus if can come home with a haruan. In future to fish haruan we need to hire a helicopter to fish in the wild.
No hard feelings.

Ops! in the wrong tread. Should be in the haruan C&R

I’m hoping to breed one of the dwarf/colorfull snakehead later when i get the breeding pairs..hopefully

Where do they sell aquarium big enough for haruan s?

I live for the next second, minute, hour, day, week, month, year, decade, century.
