great catch!
are they generally sport fish or eaten as well?
i thought murrel is an absolutely different species from haruan? it’s cobra snakehead, whereas haruan is striped snakehead
I only have 13 years of fishing experience, so must beri tunjuk ajar!
WOW! Look at their SIZE! These are almost as large as our average Tomans. Are they really Striped Snakeheads or another species?
I live for the Hunt!

Nice catches bro..They are actually Toman Bunga or Cobra Snakehead as TJS mentioned earlier..They have beautiful black and white marking on their body..
Murrel of India are Channa Marullius, cousins of our haruan (Channa striata or striatus).
We were catching murrel in Cauvery up to 3 kg. The standard lure is Mepps spinner, although George Voon and I were hauling them in using spinnerbaits and plastic worms. More efective since they’re relatively snag-free.
On one trip, Geroge did a demo of plastic worm to two Brit anglers. They were amazed at how he could catch murrel, almost at will! The trick is to guess where the fish are stationed: close to underwater rocks or vegetation, in medium-to-slow water.
The 3-kg fish was landed by George. It took off like a mahseer! It’s exciting fishing since you catch them in the shallows, and the fish goes into a frenzy of runs and thrashings.
The murrel is generally longer than our haruan, but the general design is very similar. A friend in Pakistan says that this species grows much larger over there. 10-kg is a specimen fish, and the unofficial record is a monstrous 30-kg [:0]
Well, you could say that murrle is the sister to our toman bunga, but they grow much bigger in India. On the same note, there’s toman too in India, but they are much smaller than ours. And their tapah is only up to about 7-kg, as opposed to our 50+ kg monsters.
I’ve been dreaming of going to Islamabad for the murrel, along with the mahseer, kajra (tengas) and mulley (tapah), but things are not so stable there right now. Maybe June next year…

yup… murrel is a close cousin to toman bungah rather than haruan. just much duller n less colourful plus much bigger size
nice info JB, din know there are miniature tomans over there… by the look of it, the murrels definitely are the boss there, personnally seen photoes of rather huge murrels well exceeding 10kg myself
and our tapah… a fish with limited gene pool left. after the monsters dissappear tat giant gene pool will be gone and our future with smaller tapahs like in the Pakistan is very real prospect indeed.

Envy for those who get big and erotic exotic fish.. When do I?? LOL XD…
Btw, nice catch.. Hopefully its CnR, to preserve for us, Malaysian as we are starving for adrenalin pumping.. Hehehe.. Cheers.

It makes for good porridge if you are tired of the same food for ten days at the Cauvery…
