My son is developing into a super cool fishing buddy. Once a float fishing fan targeting Tilapia (The Tilapia King, he called himself!) he’s now graduated to lure fishing and Haruan are without doubt the most obliging species for aspiring lure fishermen of his age.
This is his second attempt at a mining pond near KL. He was using a 1/4oz babe spin spinnerbait, 6-12lb class 6ft spinning rod, Applause 2000 reel loaded with 6lb fireline and a 12lb vanish leader.
He fired off a lovely cast close to the bank. For once the cast was not in the trees. He knows off by heart “fish do not live in trees”. He reminds me every time I have a wayward cast!
He was winding slowly when all of a sudden he says “Dad I can feel someth…Whooooooh, wooooooooh.” I turn around to the sound of a screaming reel and the sight of a well bent rod.
Proud father netted a Haruan close to 1 kg for Marlin Jnr. Unassisted catch and released after photo’s. Nice one Andrew!
Nice one Andrew, you make the old man proud indeed. Father and son, you are invited to come to VITA, bet you will not regret, the Haruan there are waiting for you. Andrew will be a fine example for other ardent haruan kids. Well done father & son team!!
Rgds,
Bro Marlin :
Hahaha .. another person infected with angling fever !!
PS : My daughter is the same - she caught a 2.5kg patin the other day - the old man ( me laa ) ZILCH - so now she keeps boasting that she has outfished her daddy …
Andrew is now just 7. He started going out in Arimbi with me, game fishing in Ujung Kulon for overnight trips when he was barely walking. He’d be about 1 1/2 years old when he started blue water fishing! His Mum was a little nervous at first, but no problem now. He learned to swim pretty much at the same time he learned to walk. Let me see if I have some early pictures of him fishing with me.
Andrew has his fathers fishing genes. No doubt about that. First time I met Rob was when he was in Tasik Prima with his son fishing. I called his mobile and he told me he was coming over to meet me. From far off I see this aluminum cartopper heading towards me. As it gets closer… I notice something; Andrew (whe was 6 years old at that time) was skilfully manning the outboard motor!!!
My first time meeting young Andrew was during the 2nd Culling event (those days) in Air Kuning. For a kid at his age, i really respect his patience and interest in fishing. This generation, is hard to find kids who willingly to indulge in outdoors epecially hobby which requires heaps of patience..ehehe
Marlin, I just show my son and daughter the photo of your son, Andrew holding up the haruan fish. They too now are inspired to be anglers. Good example too…
Bravo and well done Andrew
