Halo bro,

Bro,
Regarding the rod you can simpang la but the reel it is possible to use for surf. I personnaly have try using the Daiwa Emblem 3500 series spinning for surf fishing, for me it just nice. Load it with a 0.30 or 0.32mm dia line, you should get approx. 180 to 210 mtr for the 4000 series “depending on the reel spool” and then ties it with a 0.65 or 0.70mm dia leader approx. 6 to 8mtr long (depending the rod lenght) .
As for the rod, for me it best you look for 13 or 14 footer coz it is easy to manage, you can check for new Abu surf rod or if keen for good quality try Shimano Surf “somethin color orange)” Both if not mistaken are 3pc rod, can check this rod at Kepong Tackle. If no stock can ask Uncle Loo to order.
well im based in melaka… so the 4000 series can be used for surf fishing?.. nice… btw can i use my current braid for surf fishing or do i nid to change to mono? ive checked that 40 lb line = 0.28 mm so can use hor? and what rig nid to be used for beach fishing?
the shimano surf rod u meant was horizon surf is it? and i’ve seen some surf fishing topics and found out that they use “sinker” to cast.. im really new to inshore fishing… what is this sinker? a special weight for surf ? then 50 lb mono for leader ok?
quote:Originally posted by alex9193 6 mtrs is 19 ft .... its even longer thn the rod itself... or did u mistaken feet for mtrs in ur statement?"
Yes it is 6 meter to 8 meter, this is the length I use for a shockleader. The rod I use from 13 to 15 ft long.
Sinker is the batu ladung or lead or Casting weight.
0.28mm is fine, you can fill in more line and for the leader, we normally use 50 or 60lb/ line diameter at 0.70mm. It not advisable to use thinner diameter less than 0.65mm, as some line manufacturer rated 50lbs 2 0.50mm, ni tak bole pakai one. I personnaly refer to American standard line like berkeley Big game it is more reliable on it rating.
It not that Yellow rod, it the Orange color rod, the name is Shimano Surf … I tak ingat la the actual name. This rod come in 2 type Spinning n Multiplier, price at Kepong Tackle approx RM700 to 800, I think?
700-800 for a rod? … bomb sial… and i doubt that melaka has any fishes bigger thn 15kg.. so i dont think that rod would be necessary .btw, wat does “shockleader” actually mean here?

If you are really into surf, you will understand the difference between the Cap Ayam and Cap Rusa rod. As for what purpose is the skockleader, I think there a thread that explained about it.
Alex9193,
I am no sifu but I enjoy surf fishing very much so hopefully the following tips will be of some use to you. Note that there may be some differences betrween oz conditions and Malaysian conditions.
I have surf fished for many years with an ABU 443 Atlantic zoom - nine feet, casting weight of about 2 to 3 oz (got stolen last year).
In australia surf rods usually start at 9ft and going to 16feet. A popular allrounder would be about 12 or 13ft with maximum casting weight of 3 oz or 4 oz
The shorter rods usually have lower casting weight capabilities.
I like 3 piece 13 feet rods as they are easier to transport. Purist like one piece or 2 piece rods.
The grip size is also important. A lot of aussie rods are designed for big aussie hands thus the eva grips are too thick for small asian hands. I believe the shimano rod mentioned above is the Shimano horizon - orange colour, 3 piece, 13 feet and can cast to 220gm (almost 7 oz). Handle is nice and thin - quite light for its lenght and rating. The handle can be slid up and down to your handling comfort. Great value although not cheap. There are cheaper and good enough rods too - look around.
I normally don’t use a shock leader (bad pracice - couldn’t be bothered unless I am targetting a specific fish that require a shock leader.
I normally prefer a threadline reel for fishing but use an overhead for surf (ABU 7000 or 7500) because I tend to get bruised and cut casting finger when throwing 4 oz sinkers. Not enough sensitivity when using gloves. Threadlines reels are generally fine - just need to build some calluses like guitar playing.
I use 20lb braid with a paternoster rig. Weight at the bottom and two hooks coming out at 90 degrees to the main line. If you expect something toothy (shark) use a 3 gang hook. I have caught many small and big fish with this se up.
Also the whole setup is quite heavy and you won’t be able to hold it all day so invest in a rod holder. This is usually a metal rod with a seat for the surf rod to sit in. It gets shoved in the sand. Make sure it goes in deep enough so it won’t take off with the fish.
Also if you value your family jewels, invest in a cheap fighing belt (without the bar for the gimbal. Much more comfortable when you catch a big one.
Good luck
