i am new at using soft plastic lures, thus i am not completely sure as to how to properly rig the lures. [:I] can any kind souls out there pass down this delicate skill please? step by step pictures would be much appreciated. thanx in advance. [:)]
Bro Marlin,
One thing that wasnt really covered during your ‘seminar’ ( that was great - sharing of technology by the way ) was - what sort of fish takes what ? ( SPs, I mean ) - am actually interested in freshwater fishes - have managed to get pacus and baungs on ribbon-tail grubs - am actually trying to find out what patins are partial to … if I can entice a hookup from a 5 kg patin .. the fight would be phenomenal on a 2lb line !!
That’s the interesting part! I can give some general guidence on what types of fish will eat what soft plastics, but there are no hard and fast rules. If you work on your presentations, taking care to imitate a natural food item, be it a small fish, a crab, a prawn, a lizard or a frog, you’ll catch all the species of fish that eat those food items. I’m constantly increasing the number of different species I’ve caught on SP’s and it’s a bigger list than other types of lures.
Someone asked my at the seminar, if I could only fish with one type of soft plastic, what would it be? Quek answered pretty quickly (a curl tail grub) but I’d go even further and say a 2" curl tail grub or possibly the 1 1/2" paddle tail slider grub. There isn’t much you can’t catch on these things. Smaller lures get more bites, but you’ll get lots of small fish between the big ones.
If you find out what soft lastics Patin eat, be sure to post it here!
I have to agree with that. Curly tail grubs are espiecially deadly on haruan in my experience. I use it as a last resort when i fish Soft Plastics!!

Earth is NOT inherited from our ancestors BUT borrowed from our children!
sorri for the late reply, but a reply nonetheless.
sg pinang is a private farm. in the farm they have lots of ponds. you can fish at a few selected ponds. no entrance fee. if u want to keep the fish, then u have to pay. they have a fixed price list for the fish they have there. if u just wanna fish C&R style, you can too, but of course need to carefully dehook and release the fish la.
kpg jaya bakti is just a kampung located at one of the tributaries of batang rambungan. i dun believe i have seen a pond there before, and even if there are ponds, they’re most probably tiger prawns farm. you can rent boats, boatman included, or otherwise, to bring u fishing at btg rambungan, for day or night fishing.
The “upright” or “stand-up” jig head is rigged conventionally with an exposed hook, texas rigged or weedless, depending upon the type of jig head. The plastic you use with these types of jig heads needs to wave its tail, so something flexible, like a ribbon tail worm, preferably with some buoyancy to help it stand up is needed. You can fish these with a rocking motion so the plastic just wiggles in place, or you can hop it along like a bait fish stopping every so often to forage on the bottom.
Here’s a jig head you may be familiar with from shops in KL. I have some of these and they are available locally. Only trouble is they get hung up in snags.
Many types of plastics could be used, so it pays to experiment.
There’s also another way to get the same effect. Wacky rig your bait with a hook in the centre. Put one of those nail worm weights in one end. The weight takes the nose of the bait to the bottom and when you lift the rod, the body lifts up and waves its tail in the air.
Marlin
Thanks for the info, shall try it one day using these jighead.
BTW what type of fish in our waters shall take the sp on this stand up jig heads.

Feeding fish if not get any on rod and line, let them grow bigger to fish another day.
The usual suspects - in particular Haruan. All the snakehead species will eat this presentation as will more than likely another bottom hugging ambush predator I have yet to catch, Marble Goby. Some of the ctafish species. Perhaps some unexpected fish as well. I’m always amazed at the variety of fish that will eat a well presented soft plastic.
The list of sea fish that will eat a stand-up plastic is enormous.
if u ever do come to kuching, give me a buzz and i’ll bring u to a place known for its abundance of marble goby where u can test ur SP. can check out pix of that place at my blog!!! i caught those MG using hydrid SP… aka berkle blade dancers.
