HOOKING A STINGRAY

Hi All,

In my recent surf fishing trip to Teluk Rubiah, Lumut, Khalid@Surfwarden a fellow surf angler caught a 16 kg ray…awesome!

The curious thing is that the fight wasn’t so awesome at all and he managed to land the monster within 20-30 mins.

My heaviest ray caught was only 10 kg but it gave me a hell of a fight though!

Anyway, when the 16 kg ray was landed, I noticed that the whole bait/hook was swallowed deep, real deep.

An experienced angler who happened to be there said that the ray wasn’t fighting hard because the hook was too deep in and it was hurting!

Most of the rays I caught were hooked in the mouth and they run like hell! even the 5 - 6 kg ones.

Guys, what do you think…any truth to this theory??

MSC

bang aznaff… cant help u here lah, havent caught any rays to date, only 'em tuka got lar hehe… but that one no fight lar, coz saucer size only mah teehehehe…

cheers

Caught 2 rays before size from 5-6kgs. Hooked in the mouth and both gave a hell of a fight.

Rahim is damn lucky that poor ray is damn hungry, if not he sure cry one.

Cheers.[8D]

Binjai,

Don’t lah say like that, good catches from the beach is not as easy as before due to heavy netting and all…on light tackle, tuka can be a good fight what!

MSC

hi guys , will disagree.

remember the monster i hooked up some time back ? that one weighed in at 31kgs. hook was deep in. had swolled the whole 6" dead belanak i rigged as bait.

but it was a pari harimau, so maybe the difference.

that one took me an hour to land … on 30lb berkley line, and u know lah berkeley line how thick. gave me the best fight ever on max drag i dared to push it on. worked the drag to the max till overheated and 3/4 spooled the ultegra 14000xt on the first run. let me see if i still have the pics og the line in the mouth

generally from what i have experienced, pari beting, or the common brown ray, the bigger they are, the easier to pull in. smaller brown rays put up better fights as they heve more drag and stubborn buggers, where else the bigger ones dont tend to “lekap” and follow the run in. when i used to fish at padang temu 12kg sizes would come in in less than 10 mins. [;)] i usually get better fights on sizes from 4-7kgs

smaller rays have a tendency to be hooked at the mouth as they dont usually suck in the baited hook like bigger ones. bigger rays , more powerful the vacuum cleaner they use [:D] so tendency for hook to be inside, which guarantee’s a landing … provided the angler knows how to control his gear!

bro khalid, hope u made some nice asam pedas with it man !

cheers

Hi Raakesh,

Interesting info, in other words…pari rimau fights harder and so do smaller paris!

Whether they are hooked deep or not doesn’t realy have an impact on the manner the pari fight!

What say you Onn …guys??

MSC

Aji Aznaff,

Well, I seem En.Rahim fighting the doom pari, would say it took him approx.10min or so to land it, fighting wise and drag pulling only when that doom pari 10-20m to the water line, got a few pull here and there. Before this En.Rahim just pumping the Ayam A1.

In case of 31kg by Raakesh, I think it more toward weight to power ratio.

Remember ur 10kg Pari Lalat aka Rimau at Pantai Lanun, hook up on the neck, you have to take a rest time to finally landed it n the beach with my help graffing. Overall time taken something 30 minutes.

Took me 15-20 minute to land a 12kg P.Pasir at Pintu Gadung, fighting like hell.

Bottom line it’s Lucky Rahim to land that doom pari hehehe…

Onn,

True also…but I do believe the Pari Lalat/rimau fights harder than the normal pari lah.

the riben biru i fought in kuantan was an awesome fighter…1 up to the reben biru when my 10lb line succumbed to its might..

cheers..

bro. 12footer… maybe ur line aged oredi or got some nicks here & there, so might not be up to 100% strength lar most prolly… anyway, any idea how big it was? i’m using 15lbs sufix synergy & the line damn liat like donno wat lar hehe… snagged in sg. mka oso very difficult to break free, meletup at the main line when it finally broke… so i know my ultra simple uniknot held very well hehe…

cheers

hahaha binjai…the line i used was a 10lb suffix synergy too..the ray was prolly about 3 kg when i saw it at near the gigi air (watertooth as aji on always mention..damn cantik…purplelish in color and spots on it..i have no gaff and was lost of ideas on how to beach it when i saw it…i first tot i wanna just grab it but freak out when i suddenly tot it was a dangerous idea as it may libas..so i just hold the main line thinking of pulling it ashore but the line suddenly snapped…whoaaaa…i wanted to cry but it will not make me a man hehehehe…but the experience of playing with it was awesome as it goes left and right…hmmm…as i don’t have a pic it is simply like running 100m under 10 sec clocked using jam tangan hahahaha…no one want to recognize the feat except myself…so still the masses say i cannot claim i have caught a pari…anyhow like urself..we cud only boast of the samples hehehehe

cheers..

bro 12footer…

sample pun sample lah, still a ray what … hehe… anyway, aji aznaff pinjam thread OT tho… my friend recently caught barramundi 2 nites in a row lah, kat sg. m’ka there… wah damn jealous lah bro. but wat to do… he’s da man… the bestest thing is that dat barra is really hungry lah, coz it took the tesco prawns hehe… bottom fishing lak, using a single hook paternoster… wah, this friend of mine really have all the luck lah

cheers

Hello guys…happen to pop in…haha…

regarding ray fighting strenght…it all depend on how it hook n the type of rays n it size. Most of the time if the hook is deeply hook inside the stomach…it will be more easier to control them. If on the mouth the fight is stronger..Worse is the hook is just hook on some part of the body..like the outside of the wing or near the tail part..haha..this is very tough to fight especially during strong current flow..
I ever foul hook one on the outside of the stomach…it like flying a kite in the water..haha…
As for the different type of rays…those tail like banana leaf one is the strongest…follow by the spotted leopard ray as they are thicker in size. Those common brown ray is the weakest among the three. But due to it size n the current flow during the hookup…haha…it could be a nightmare for the angler.

Hi Shoreangler,

Welcome and thanks for the valuable input.

How’s the surf fishing catches in Singapore beaches nowadays…heard it’s getting really tough to hook any biggies, true?

Are you into distance casting?

What type of surf tackles do you use?

MSC

Thanks aznaff hamazah, haha..very glad to found this forum..Yup, the catch on the shore of Singapore main land is getting worse. Reason is due much to the changing shoreline every now n then. Especially rays…very hard to get those above 15kg size. U need to work very hard to search for them at more Ulu area like some small island where no much angler go.
Haha…me not interest in distance casting. I mainly on big game surf fishing..So far this year still not so bad for me…Up to date my 25kg Cobia catch on 03-02-2007 is still holding the biggest catch from the shoreline here. haha..waiting for someone to break it. U can see my catch at my site..www.shoreangler.8m.com.
My tackle are quite simple…combine of heavy to light surf tackle. My mainly heavy surf tackle is a 12ft Penn Powergraph surf rod match with A Penn 500L Jigmaster multiplyier reel. This is the setup I always used to target big monster. But sometime I will play for small fish with light tackle. I have a 12ft Loomis N franklin classic rod pair with a Abu 6500 sport rocket…U can see my tackles on my site under “contact me page”

Hi Shoreangler,

25kg cobia from the shore, that’s awesome man…and reading your story, you must be a big time hard-core angler too! I’m amazed of your endurance…

Anyway, you mentioned that if a ray swallowed the bait/hook deep, then it’s easier to control the ray when fighting it…why is it so eh?

MSC

Once the hook is deeply inside the fish throat..every pumping of the rod or pulling by the ray itself will inflict more injured to the fish..indirectly it will cause the fish to be weaker over the time. But if the hook is just set beside the lip of the fish or even the outside skin…it cause less injury so the fish will have more strenght to fight on.
