Is circle hook “better” than conventional hook?
(For bottom/bait fishing, not suitable for lures)
In the “early” days of my fishing adventures, the feeling of striking the fish and setting the hook was “euphoric” (well, I think you guys know what I mean). Then I read about circle hook and all its advantages. At about the same time, I was more into C&R rather than “meat-hunting”. I tried it and am glad to report high rates of success.
The only thing to remember is to resist the urge to strike during the initial take by the fish.
Yes, share your experience except that I would also add that in some cases we can use them for " soft body / dead bait " luring.
Example is small dead sotong when I was casting for Dorados in Tuas, Kedah. Here you have a lot of space, they strike near the surface. Let them run with your circle hook, and engage your " Fighting Drag " to initiate the initial hook up. After that, these fellas will hook themselves with all their antics to escape.
Yes, don’t ever strike - not unless you want the bait to come flying back at you ! On a rocking boat, dodging is not easy.
Well I am an advocate for circle hooks when baiting for fish.. they are super awesome and challenging when used for sail fish… have yet to use them on macks… but I also use them when fishing for Toman, so far so good…

rigging up a bait for circle hooks is tricky as well. bait size & hook size need to match. the circle hook must be properly exposed in order for it to work! most failure rates come as a result of using the circle hooks as you would a ‘normal’ hook.
for drifting live baits, best to use a big circle hook and expose the circle part as much as possible so it can rotate & latch on to the lips.
don;t know why but just not fond of using them altho the effectiveness and impressiveness is undeniable…
more or less attributed to my fishing which circle around artificial lure and active fishing. Even if baiting also active one… see line move only edi hantam so can get fish faster and lip hooked, more interesting(but when no fish bite then scratch lam pah edi la unfortunately). because oh… i always fish small fish only, big fish very susah hav to wait, then lam pah itchy so no choice hahahaha no circle yet
Well seriously… i’ve tried them… but the soon hock still deep throat it and the haruan swallow it… so how? then the hook up rate so low, fish hantam bait gone all the time… perhaps i use the wrong size hook with wrong bait as noted above. Anyway still like to use prawn hook debarb now, so fun catching small fish(the size u normally use for bait, haha)

Here’s some list: FV(got fish catchin is another matter), luring adventure at variety of wild pond(nvr try b4 looks good only) or river(small, limited opportunity but got fish, small, try b4), (if lazy)nearby pond luring(haruan) or bottom(got nice carps but small fish will take before the big ones all the time), ultralight tackling of cichild, float fishin(tilapia palm size), scout the area for more wild ponds in semenyih, no sukida bull for me…
sunday would be nice… my exam end and my school gonna start the next day. However for the nearby pond i mentioned crowded on weekends and if u interested still i’ll msg u further bout it ok
