How Much Line To Spool?

When I was new to fishing, my belief was that a fish would tear away at least 50 to 60 yards of line away when it furiously attacked the bait and took it away in its first run.

So I spooled two or nearly 2 spools of 100 m. line each time, depending on the spool capacity and line thickness.

Now I realise that it was just a fallacy. Except on very rare occasions. So rare that it happened to me just once. In that instance the fish never surfaced. Just ripped off half a spool of my line until it broke off.

So now I only spool 80 to 100 m. of line each time and find it adequate to handle most situations.

How much line do you fill your spool with ?

perhaps it’s a matter of what kind of fishing we are doing?

when i started fishing (mostly at payponds) not very long ago(still newbie here), i too wasn’t sure how much line i should spool for my reels. i now realize that we dun usually need more than 30-40 metres of line at payponds.

however, i guess if one would be going for bigger wild fish in larger lakes it would be different, more so for sea-fishing, esp deap-sea.

depending on type of fishing that u do, type of reel, type of line.

some say better to have more than not enough.

i say spool it just enough, for comfort & ease of maintenance. don’t forget u have to wash the line(braid) after saltwater fishing. just bring along spare spools of 100m lines.

here are line caps for the fishing that i do:

lure casting for toman/sebarau, 100m of 15-20lb braids will do most of the time. have yet to kena despooled yet, phew.

lure casting for MJ/Siakap, same as above.

light jigging: at least 200m of PE1 line (but scary if kena hit by huge ebek)

tenggiri casting, drifting: 150m of 20lb mono

PB and tarpon: 100m of 6lb braid

For paypond I use 80m of 8# mono line for float fishing. Bottom usually 100m of 15# mono. These are my Tow Foo setup (the only convenient place at the moment). Float fishing around canteen area. If need to bottom fishing and far-cast then i’ll use my 15# rig. I think the main key is to use quality line. Avoid those cheapos claimed to be japanese made. Fav so far is Maxima Chameleon (8lbs)… the abrasive resistance is second to none… for mono la…

I think we share the same views. For fresh water fishing the fish does not go far. Or they hardly can go far as the rod exerts constant pull on it and the drag just defuses its desperate dash for freedom . I suppose 100 m is adequate for most fishing unless you have to drop 100 m of line to reach the fish, then you should add that to your calculaltion of how much line to spool.

Most of the time yes… fresh water fish don’t run far… but I’ve seen more than 100m of 15# braid despooled… and this is at TF… very rare I think…

And now a pixy or shallow spool starts to make senses.

gerard,
on shallow spools…hahhaha…especially on spinning reels… if u wanna go ultralight, get a ‘regular’ sized reel like 2000-3000 sizes with shallow spool instead of a small 750 or 1000 sized reels. the larger diameter of the spool will help make line more manageable. small spools=more coils.

Two years ago, I use 100m line each time. [:)] But now, I just use 150m Length Sport Spool Fishing Line. As Smooth surface and 0.323mm diameter line with plastic material allows me for longer casting.
